As for the Bonds market, it looks like a good time to sell
By BOB MOLINARO

Sad sack: Until now, one word I never associated with Barry Bonds was pitiful.

Image makeover: Not only will prodigal son Marcus Vick start the season at quarterback for Virginia Tech, but if you believe the spin coming from Blacksburg, he’ll take the field in a Boy Scout uniform.

Dog and pony show: The congressional committee hearing with major league baseball players exposed another possible side effect of steroid use — the inability to provide a straight answer.

Groupies: The New York Times reported that a number of committee members who were grilling the players asked them for autographs outside the hearing room.

Down and out: The biggest loser in the tournament has been the Big East, which had UConn, Syracuse and Boston College — all seeded No. 4 or better — drop out early.

Getting it right: In the name of political correctness, I suppose, the media reported with great fanfare that Tennessee’s Pat Summitt had surpassed Dean Smith’s all-time record for college basketball victories. Not true. What Summitt actually did was extend her own record for most women’s basketball victories. The Smith-Summitt comparison isn’t a case of apples and oranges. It’s apples and turnips.

Invisible man: He isn’t in college basketball at the moment, but Matt Doherty has had a big impact on the NCAA tournament. It was the deposed North Carolina coach, after all, who recruited the heart of Roy Williams’ Tar Heels team.

One and done? Tar Heels fans might find worrisome a Sports Illustrated “Inside the NBA” column that said Utah’s Andrew Bogut is the likely No.1 pick in this summer’s draft, “though that could change when teams see 6-foot-9 North Carolina freshman Marvin Williams in predraft workouts.” Key word: when.

Tobacco Road rerun: If North Carolina State and North Carolina win tonight in Syracuse, it sets up the first regional final between ACC schools since Jim Valvano’s Wolfpack upset Ralph Sampson’s Virginia team in 1983.

Musical chairs: Think college basketball puts coaches under a lot of stress? Not compared with the NBA, where six coaches have been let go this season.

Dog bites man: At the conclusion of every college basketball team’s season, men’s or women’s, the media assure fans that next year’s team is going to be better. This team, that team; all will be much improved. And yet, remarkably, somebody always finishes last in its conference. Funny how that happens.

He can have it: This season’s edition of the Lakers — or “my team,” as Kobe Bryant likes to call it — is in danger of being just the fifth squad in franchise history to miss the playoffs. Nice going, Kobe.

Football fix: Utah quarterback Alex Smith impressed NFL personnel at a campus workout, reportedly moving himself into contention as the 49ers’ No. 1 pick. Whoever selects Smith will be getting a quick learner. At Utah, he finished an economics degree in two years and with a 3.74 grade-point average.

Real hardball: American athletes who think they’ve got it hard dealing with fans should be glad they don’t live in Brazil. In recent months, the mothers of four star Brazilian soccer players have been kidnapped and held for ransom.

Waiting game: The successor to Pete Gillen at Virginia will have a lot of room for growth. In the history of the ACC, only Clemson and Florida State have worse conference records than the Cavaliers.
