I have been informed that some well known and lesser known sports books are looking to sell...

It appears to be more of a BUYER'S market out there at this time due to the plethora of bookmakers wanting out...

The reasons vary from wanting to cash in on their hard work to barely scraping by...

I understand the need for anonymity regarding which books want to sell because that may wrongfully be confused with trouble...

But if and when I learn of any sales involving new ownership and management, I'll be happy to share...

Shrink,

What is a ball park figure for a decent book? I am light years and a few winning lottery tickets away from that sum, I'm sure.

Thanks.

Apollo Kid,

That figure varies tremendously based on the customer base and the average yearly "hold."

My guess would be that in order to buy a GOOD product, one would to have to pony up 3-5 million for starters...

This figure is just a guesstimate and depending on which book, can be a lot higher...

Just like many sportsbettors do, bookmakers get burned out in this business as well.

Believe this is one subtle reason that could be contributing to some shops selling.

I would tend to think also that some find out that this is not an easy racket, considering the risks and time involved to become moderately successful.

As SHRINK has mentioned, I would not take a sportsbook selling as an indication that they were in trouble financially, as there are MANY factors that could lead to this.

Guess what? I cannot name one book that is NOT for sale for the right price. You think these guys want to sit around grinding out some money while every year the market becomes tougher to beat the rest of their lives?

I don't remember if it was youor somwone else quoted a customer acquisition cost of approx $500 per head, does that correspond to your estimated $3MM-$5MM purchase price.

thanks

This is a good time to sell, Baseball coming next week and many books HATE booking baseball. you won't see any sales or talks during football, now that college hoops are almost over, the sale rumors start!

Those that buy and want to play "big shot" for a while will receive a huge wake up call.

It is not easy to run a book. Especially successfully. Many factors in place.

I believe that when a book is sold to a first timer, the book will most likely fail.

But, I think most owners want to sell just for burn out reasons. Running a book takes its toll.
