Brown, 64, has missed the defending NBA champions' last nine games since undergoing surgery March 14 to correct a recurring urinary problem. He told the players and club president Joe Dumars on Tuesday that he planned to spend the rest of this week recovering.

The Pistons, 5-4 in his absence, have lost four of their last five games.

"I am not going to let them go very much longer [without an answer]," Brown told reporters. "I want to get things settled. My whole thing is, I don't know if I can coach and not be healthy. I don't want to think about that. I want to see if I can get better."

Brown declined to say what he would do if he didn't feel better by the weekend.

"I don't want to speculate on that," he said. "I want to see if I can do better."

Brown missed six games earlier this season after undergoing hip surgery on Nov. 3, a day after opening his second season behind the Pistons bench with a 87-79 win over Houston. His surgery on March 14 was to address a swollen bladder, which was side effect from the hip procedure.

Brown would not elaborate on his recovery.

"It's a private thing," he said. "When I feel like I am well enough to coach, I am going to be back. ... I'm trying to get well. I came back too soon with the hip surgery, and I have been dealing with some things for 4½ months that have been difficult for me."

He will be back at practice Thursday and behind the bench for Detroit's next game Friday. So much for newspaper reports.
