This is a very interesting trade proposal that the 49ers and Chargers are pursuing. San Francisco to trade #1 overall pick to Chargers for Phillip Rivers. I think this trade would solve alot of problems for both teams. Just was interested in what others thought.

What is in it for the Chargers? Who do they pick at #1 since they dont need a qb or rb?

Whats in it for the Chargers, removal of future QB controversy, and salery cap room. I dont know what they would take with the first pick, but there are so many options when you hold that card. They could trade down, endless options.

Chargers would take a big salary cap hit (remainig signing bonus comes forward, may be all this year or split this year and next).

that is the same reason the 49ers (a cash poor team now) might do it, they get the #1 pick without having to pay the signing bonus.

that said, i'm not a big phillip rivers fan.

alot of scouts are drooling over braylon edwards of michigan, he'd complement that offense pretty well..i don't think he's an overall #1, but then i don't think anyone in this year's draft is......i'm not a rivers fan either...don't know what the fascination is with them....

I like Mike WIlliams over Braylon but not sure he warrants a #1 overall.

Im not sold on Rivers or Losman from last years draft.

If they were selecting at bottom third of 1st round yes. Otherwise, absolutely not.

Rivers flows with trade talk
spacer.gif

By: JAY PARIS - STAFF WRITER SAN DIEGO ---- The massive Chargers' locker room walls couldn't stop their penetration: trade rumors.

"You can either get too involved in worrying about them, like 'Oh, did you hear this?' '' Philip Rivers said. "Or you just let it go and whatever happens, happens.''

Rivers, the Chargers' backup quarterback, is a sizzling coal among the NFL's hot stove chatter. With Pro Bowler Drew Brees returning as a franchise player for $8 million, many speculate the Chargers have one quarterback too many.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 align=right border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=photo align=middle></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

So Rivers, the draft's fourth overall pick who played sparingly his rookie season, has his name tossed about the radio and Internet in purported trades.

The latest involves the San Francisco 49ers, owners of the draft's top selection. The package with the 49ers would supposedly include their No. 1 selection for Rivers, giving the Chargers' three first-round picks.

The thinking is Rivers could start more quickly for the woeful Niners than California's Aaron Rodgers, the projected first pick, or Utah's Alex Smith.

But if Rivers is Bay Area bound, it's a revelation to him and his agent, Jimmy Sexton.

"Yeah, I certainly keep in contact with (Sexton),'' Rivers said after Tuesday's offseason workout at the Chargers' facility. "There has been nothing of urgent news from his side that's he informed me of.''

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith has repeatedly said he expects Rivers to stay put. Smith proved his point by declining to negotiate with Brees on a multiyear contract.

The team would also absorb an estimated $10 million salary cap hit in a Rivers trade. It's believed Rivers received a $6.6 million roster bonus earlier this month.

So instead of absorbing a new offense, Rivers is learning about hearsay. The only Chargers quarterback exiting this offseason was the recently released Doug Flutie.

"I'm seeing how it is,'' said Rivers, who was acquired from the New York Giants last year on a draft-day deal.Ý "I'm sure it's like this every offseason, with somebody on some team.

"But it's been interesting because that has been the whole talk the whole offseason: Drew? Or Philip? Or any of them? Or nobody? Then there goes Flutie. It's kind of been a whirlwind, but we are all handing it well.''

Rivers' immediate goal is uprooting Brees. No disrespect to Brees, Rivers said, but heading into year two, Rivers didn't anticipate being No. 2.

"You can't play the what-if game,'' he said. "But there are so many different (circumstances): what if I was here the whole time in training camp? What would have happened if we hadn't started off the way we did? There are so many things. But certainly this isn't the way you envision going into your second season.''

Rivers, who was 5-for-8 for 33 yards and a touchdown last season, isn't tiptoeing into his battle for Brees' position.

"My way of thinking is it's mine to go get,'' Rivers said. "And that is the only way you can approach it as a player and a competitor.Ý Who knows what will happen in training camp's 30 practices and the preseason games?

"I just think both of us want what's best for the team, and we'll just see what happens when it's all said and done. I will get my shot. And when you get the shot, you can't fall on your face. You have to be ready. And I'll be ready.''

Thanks for the article RPM. A young playoff team with 3 first round picks. Can you imagine? You have to hand it to the Chargers, they have made some great draft day trade the last 5 years. Trading the #1 pick for LT and DB.

A.J. Smith has done a remarkable job in San Diego...they finally have an organization with a brain.

Trading their #1 pick for Phillip Rivers would make no sense. If the Niners are planning on drafting a QB, there are much more talented entries in this year's draft then Rivers. Local boy Aaron Rodgers and Alex Smith are both more talented then Rivers.

As usual, solid analysis by OMTed. The niners need alot of help IMO, if they could pull a Parcels or Belichek and trade down for a surplus of picks that would be their best option IMO.

i guess alex smith could be solid, but if they could get rivers and a late first rounder or a second round pick, i think that would be the way to go.

Niners would be foolish to draft a QB right now. They need lots of good bodies, not a QB that will be running for his life for years. They have so many holes, where do they even start picking? If they can trade down a few spots and end up with Mike Williams they will be on the right path.

in rivers they would get a system QB whos offensive coordinator was norm chow in the early part of his nc st days. hes got a year learning from brees and flutie and the talk here is braylon edwards becomes the 1st pick and a charger. with keenen Mc cardell on one side to teach edwards and gates emerging and LT to carry the ball the bolts can turn thier attention to the defense.im not sold on AJ smith. he butts heads with schottenheimer constantly. its marty who wants to keep rivers and aj who wants to dump brees. but drew screwed up the master plan by playing out of his mind. they have a hard on for edwards and brought him here to show him around the city.tho aj smith denies this rumour its being reported everywhere.john butler left this franchise in ruins. and the ryan leaf experience killed them capwise for years. now they hired jim steeg who was in charge of putting the super bowl together every year for the NFL. hes here to grease the skids with the people of sd for a new stadium. without a new crib the sdsu aztecs and the holiday bowl both go bye bye as will the club.mark fabiani(clintons lawyer during monicagate)has been working city council and schmoozing the peeps for a stadium vote in 2006. this city only supports a winner. and thats why this trade could happen.bring in edwards and what ever else the team needs to have another winning year and another playoff appearance and they will get thier new stadium just like the padres got petco park after thier world series appearance against the yankees in 98. edwards for rivers in theory buys them that stadium.brees is god here and we havent had a guy like that since dan fouts. stan humphries is remembered as a good player who stood out too tho. anyway ive said enough. the trade could happen for very high stakes reasons beyond the playing field.its for future superbowls and the holiday bowl. what ever edwards signs for pales in comparison to what the city reaps in the years to come.~RG
