In 1979 the Pope visited Iowa. It was in Des moines at a place called living history Farms. I took my Mom and my cousin took his Mom, my aunt. It was an awesome experience and there was a special feeling in the air. We actually got as close as 10 feet from him after the Mass he clebrated at the site. I'm not a profound Catholic but it was a special experience.
Here's the funny part of the story. We had to get there at 6 AM or so because there was over 100,000 people attending. The Pope did not arrive until around 1 PM as I remember. Anyway it was a long wait and my cousin and I decided that we needed a couple of beers before the Pope arrived. There was a Hotel across the road so we told our Mom's we were going "for a walk". When we got to the Hotel bar entrance I opened the door and the place was PACKED! It was packed with Priests! In fact we were the only 2 who were not Priests. It was impossible to even get to the bar for a beer. I told my cousin to be ready to move fast towards the bar when I gave him the sign. In a loud voice I yelled Hey Father!! Every Priest in the place turned and looked at me! My cousin then made his move and got to the bar. All the Priests knew what I had done and why. We didn't have to buy a beer the 1 1/2 hours we were there!
Sometimes it's great to be a Catholic.
