I don't but my friend always talks about him.

I like his poem:

Gather up close and hear what I say,
On Feb. 6 we'll be ready to play.
The New York Nets are going to be here,
And we need ALL our fans to come out and cheer,
Because the Nets are rough when they come to play,
With Kenon and Paultz and the bad Dr. J.,
But our time has come and WE ARE READY,
With Fly and Gus and Goo and Freddie.
So gather your money and place your bets,
Because on the night of the 6th,
We're going to beat the Nets.

Barnes was quite a character. He went to Providence College. He once attacked a teamate there with a tire iron and another time was cought trying to board a flight with a piece on him.

There once was a doctor named Erving,
Whose slam dunks were especially unnerving,
But when Marvin gets movin',
And the crowd gets to groovin',
For the doctor a hospital bed they'll be reserving.

bob costas tells the story of how marvin wouldnt board a flight one time.

bob says, " marvin was looking at his ticket and noticed that they were supposed to land at a time that was earlier than the time they were to take
off "

marvin says " hey bro , i dont know about you , but i aint boardin no time machine "

they were flying to st louis and obviously going thru a time zone...

Marvin Barnes played with Ernie Digregorio at Providence and they lost in the final four. 1971? There was also another Marvin Barnes nicknamed Bad News and he was in the NBA in the 1960's. I think two different guys.

Marvin once didn't show up for a game and was found hanging out in a pool hall.
I think you're thinking of Jim "Bad News" Barnes, a Celtic and Knick in the 60's-70's.
