Anyone ever run out of gas before ? It happened to me(on the highway) for the first time last week.Of course the wife wasn't happy that I hadn't renewed our AAA membership so she had to drive 10+ miles with some gas for me. It never would have happened if I hadn't been driving her car. While I'm waiting for her to bring the gas,I'm reading her owners manual and find out that her fuel warning light comes on when there is 1.5 gallons left in the tank ! My car,and every car I've ever owned, has the light come on when there's about 3 gallons left !
She insisted on driving her own car home. The funny thing is that she only brought about a gallon of gas and she ended up running out of gas driving around looking for a gas station instead of driving straight home !!! Me ,being the type of person I am(laid back and always looking for humor in most everything) thought it was a pretty comical morning....SHE DIDN'T THINK SO !

If anyone has watched Curb Your Enthusiasm(Larry David show) you may recall the episode when his wife cancels their AAA membership and he ends up getting a flat tire. Great episode and the guy is a pure genius IMO.

I did when I was younger..

word to the wise... always keep your tank above the quarter tank mark.. not so much so you dont run out of gas.. but its to protect your fuel pump.. the pump hangs in the tank and is usually submerged in gasoline..keeping it cool... when tanks are low.. the fuel pump is totally exposed and over heats quickly... done many times.. eventually you'll be replacing the fuel pump... which is about a 500 dollar job.

and a PS-- if you drive a GM car... DO NOT USE BP GAS. cannot stress that enough.

My $60 AAA membership is well worth it to me personally.

Just the discounts I receive for various products pays for the membership.

Only been a member for the past 4 years and wish I had done so long before that.

Thanks for the "tip". After buying 2 new tires last week(because I didn't rotate them for awhile) and getting new break pads this week,I don't need the expense of a new fuel pump !

we've had AAA for 15+ years but I just stuck the renewal notice on the counter for a month or so and "put it off".My wife "reminded " me about paying it after the gas incident. The notice is still sitting there so I guess I'll send it in today(maybe !)

yep, running the car low on gas is murder on a fuel pump. Learned that painful (expensive) lesson when i was younger.
Never ran out of gas in my own car, but went to one of those buy here/pay here places bout 10 yrs. ago in my pizza delivery days, was hoping to pick up a cheap car to work in, didn't want to wear out my "good" car. The salesman suggests this little quad 4 Oldsmobile. Looked nice, so he gets the keys, makes a copy of my DL, and off i go.
I get around the corner and head towards the highway, and the car starts sputtering like hell. I look down and the tank is on E. Car dies as i coast into a BP (yeah, Nor, BP) station. I put a buck of gas in the car, and take it back to the car lot.

Last year I was coming back from a road trip and my fuel light came on....I went home without filling up. I had heard you can drive about 30 miles with the fuel light on before you run out of gas, so I stupidly decided to put it to the test. Later on in the week, and about 25 miles later, i decided that was enough and I headed to the gas station to fill up. Ran out just before getting to the gas station and coasted my way right to the pump. If it had been 50 foot further I wouldnt of made it, but it was perfect.

done it a few times

once with a car i used to have - the tank indicated a 1/4 tank left

i am driving mom and i to work saturday morning when the car runs out of gas BUT maybe someone was looking down on me for there was no traffic on the streets before 7A this day and since i was going about 50 i had a decent "head of steam" to pull into a gas station about 100 yards up ahead on the left. i ran out of gas but luckily was able to pull into a station with the "momentum" i still had

there are several good reasons to keep you tank at a quarter or above...

you actually get slightly better gas mileage.

running on a lower tank is very bad for the injectors as you get "heavies" and particles that can get into the fuel lines when the tank is really low.

and last but not least,,,,, its cheaper to fill up!~

I ran out of gas before the toll station(piaje) near the cr airport. coasted through the attendants and stopped in front of the small police building. the cops could not help. I called my mecanic and he brought me a gallon of gas.
There were several times when a bunch of young guys who were walking along the highway asked if they could push my car somewhere. I felt like they wanted to rob me so I declined their offer.

It was my fault. I should of fixed my gas gage when I bought the car. Now, I make sure to fill her up twice a week.

Wolfie_cr,

Maybe...

Anyway, I give the impression of having no money. remember, I drive a YUGO. I should change the name to NOPLATA.

I have many stories of breaking down and having to find a local mecanic in some isolate places. I give my girlfriend ample credit, she must really love me to put up with the car.
