Season: 1-1, -0.08

St. Louis -114 vs. Houston
Playing against Andy Pettite. From today's Houston Chronicle:

Pettitte readily admits he can't go full bore when he takes the mound today against St. Louis. The start will be Pettitte's first in the regular season since he underwent surgery last Aug. 24 to repair a torn flexor in his left elbow. After maintaining a cautious pace during spring training, Pettitte knows he must take it slow.

"I'm not extremely happy with the way that my arm progressed during spring training. I thought I'd be a lot further along than I am," Pettitte said. "But this is what I've got. Probably the first few starts, we're going to have to keep a close eye on me. I just hope that I continue to progress."

Pettitte, who injured his elbow on a check swing while batting in his first start last season, threw 80 pitches Friday at Round Rock in his third spring training start. Though he used the word "marginal" to describe his command, Pettitte has progressed markedly from late January, when light toss was a strenuous daily regimen.

Pettitte finished 6-4 with a 3.90 ERA in 2004. He had three stints on the disabled list, including his final trip following his last appearance of the season on Aug. 12. Pettitte made 15 starts and logged 83 innings — both career lows. Because he spent so much time out of the rotation, Pettitte has had a difficult time gauging when he will return to form.

Back later with tonight's plays.

Wed night play:

Marlins-Braves over 8.5, -102
WHen Brian Mac posted the under as one of his plays today, well I immediately had to check out the merits of fading him. And sure enough, this play makes even more sense on a fundamental basis. In his last 60 innings vs. the Florida, Hampton has given up 40 earned runs (6 ERA). Leiter, on the other hand, has given up just 15 ER in 61 IP (2.21 ERA) vs. the Braves. However, it doesn't appear that Leiter is quite in command right now. From MLB.com:

Say this about Al Leiter, a rotten performance didn't spoil his sense of humor. In his final spring outing Friday, Leiter miffed himself with a poor performance in a minor league game against the Cardinals on Field No. 2 on the Roger Dean complex in Jupiter. The Marlins' starter in the second game of the regular season, scheduled for next Wednesday against the Braves, Leiter gave up two runs on two hits in four innings. The disturbing statistics for Leiter and the Marlins are the six walks and 94 pitches he needed to throw those four frames.

"I figured it was April Fools, so I did not only fool everybody else, I fooled myself," Leiter quipped afterwards.

Even though it was on a minor league field in a setting vastly different than what will take place beginning next Tuesday, Leiter admitted to be troubled by his lack of command.

"Today upset me because I did want to take this as seriously as any other game, and visualize what I need to do to make good pitches," the 39-year-old left-hander said. "It's purely a mental thing, because you start doubting, you start wondering, you run through certain things you need to do. All the little check points I look for, to correct wildness, I wasn't fixing."

In a word, Leiter said his performance "stunk." Leiter's effort against the Cardinals' minor leaguers followed up five Grapefruit League appearances in which he was 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA, including 15 walks in 16 innings.
