did anyone use the original sports pager service out of vegas? about twelve years or more i think it was called sports beep or sports page. every few years we would need to turn in our beepers for an upgrade and usally a fee increase. wondering if they just closed the doors or are still around in some capacity? the funny thing was you could upgrade your beeper by mail or drive a distance to a select location. due to the mail taking a few days everyone usally showed up in person so not to lose any beeper info.

Back then info was valuable. I never had one, my buddy talked me out of it. Said the reception was horrible. When I moved out of Vegas I couldn't imagine life without it so I got one from DJ Franks. Great stuff for the days before cell phones had internet access and offshores were new. I remember using it to my advantage against a couple that were trying to shade my lines badly. Back then you would see the Yankees at the Stardust and Mirage -150 and an offshore would have Yankees -175 or -180.

Amazing to think how far we have come. Remember CSW? Had to pay like 30 cents a minute to connect and get data! Now data 100 times bettter is available for free.

I started gambling back in the late sixties, early seventies...there was no pager service then. I lived on scorephones. Had to explain to everyone why I had to use the payphone in a restaurant every 15 minutes while I was out on Saturday nights. Then the early models in the 70's and 80's were upgraded manually by the services (no line feed) so you were stuck on a score for a half hour. Now the computer is your tool as you can practically watch play by play on your computer now, no matter what the sport!

Times have changed...guess I'm getting old..hey Truman was President when I was born...a big innovation over Bush

Started with The Sports Page, but went to SportsNow maybe 10 years or so ago.
New hardware though leaves something to be desired. It seems they may have purchased some cheap equipment, although there are more channels and storage.
My pages shuts off nearly every day and I have to take the battery out and place it back in and turn it on.
Everytime I bring it up to Jason and the folks there, they say, well you have to use the channels every day, but they seem a bit in denial about this since, of course, I bang the hell out of the buttons nearly from 8:30 a.m. on.
I'm sure I am not the only one that is complaining, because it seems like they have a list of things to try to make sure the pages continues to work, like...

"Make sure you are using a battery with a charge in it..."

I mean c'mon.

Still the best, but if you take out the battery you can see that the things weighs just a few ounces, which is good in a way, but it just might not be as solid.

The type of pager is just listed on the outside as "Br802"

Used mine for 10 years or so. I believe it was called the "Sportspager". It costs around $120.00 for the pager and $40.00 per month for the service. Their scoring updates were fast. Good pager and very convenient. I dropped them when I got a free pager from CRIS. The last I knew, the company that took over the service is called "Beeper Plus" and they're located around Trop and Eastern.

I too depended on the scorephones all the time for updates before that. Had to listen to 5 minutes of tout crap every time. Glad those days are gone. I still find the pager is the easiest. Use it only for updates and finals and I seldom even pay attention to any of the other stuff.

you guys are right it was originally the sports page and became beeper plus. the original ones updated about every five minutes and were a bit heavy fee was 40.00 a month. they became smaller updated about every two minutes and service went to 65.00 a month by the time i gave it up several years back.

did beeper plus go under when offshore started compimg beepers or are they still around?

Still around and it's "BeepMe Las Vegas" not Beeper Plus. Also, my price stayed at $40.00. I think they added a $5.00/month extra fee if you wanted their horse racing results.
