Big overlay here as the Blue Jays will send a little known pitcher to the hill by the name of Gustavo Chacin. Chacin was a late call-up last season for the Blue Jays and started two games and won them both in rather impressive fashion. He carried that over to his first start this year when he three hit the Devil Rays en route to a 6-3 victory. In 19 innings pitched in the majors Chacin has surrendered just 11 hits and five runs for a 2.37 ERA. He also throws strikes and has issued just four walks while striking out nine. The Blue Jays are now 4-2 after taking two of three from the Red Sox. Oakland is 3-3 and the pitching rotation is in shambles early on. In fact, today’s starter, Kirk Saarloos, was an emergency replacement last Wednesday when the scheduled starter, Dan Haren came up with a blister on his pitching hand. Saarloos was brilliant against the Orioles, however, that was an unplanned start and now he’s trying to crack the rotation in the team’s home opener. Saarloos is no stranger to major league hitters as he has appeared in 60 games, 27 of them as a starter. He comes in with a career ERA of 5.24 and the opposition is hitting a rock solid .285 against him. Lastly, the A’s batting line-up is average at best and the Blue Jays will send a tough lefthander to face it tonight. A promising lefty with three good games in three starts with a nice tag works for us. Play: Toronto +1.32 (Risking 1.5 units).

TEXAS +1.05 over Anaheim

Rangers are loaded offensively, again, and one of their strengths is going to be the success they have against lefties. In fact, although it’s early, all three of their wins came against left-handers and they’ll face another one today in Jarrod Washburn. Washburn had a decent year in 2002 but was average in 2003 and worse in 2004. He spent 5½ weeks on the DL last year and while he was good in his season debut, he won’t be nearly as good today. He’s just another very average pitcher that is going to throw a gem or a good game about once every five starts. The Rangers will play their home opener this afternoon and remember this team went 50-31 in their own barn last season. Ever since he had a rib removed to improve circulation in 2001, Rogers has seen improved velocity. He got off to a nice start this year and will almost always give the Rangers an opportunity to win by keeping them in games. Home dog with the better hurler playing to a sell-out crowd gets the call here. Play: Texas +1.05 (Risking 1.5 units).
