i consider wilt chamberlin point per game average in the 61-62 season at 50.4 ppg one of the greatest sports achievments. i still consider wilt the greatest to ever play.

Wilt is BY FAR the greatest Basketball player ever. It was a joke when Jordan was voted #1. Michael's not even on the same planet as Wilt, nor did Jordan approach planet Oscar.
Whatever Wilt wanted to do, he did. Lead the NBA in scoring, in rebounds, in assists.

I saw Wilt at the old Boston garden that year. He scored 66 on a Sunday afternoon but the Celts won by double digits. He was something else around the basket.

Ty Cobb's lifetime .367 average is just as or more amazing, no one will even approach that! 20 years too..

Saw him play at the Convention Center in Philly for both the Phila. Warriors before they moved, and when he came back with the Sixers (as a defensive monster and led the league in assists)...he was the best player that EVER played the game. We both went to the same high school (Overbrook High)...he graduated 13 years before me

i saw wilt twice on the street. once about 30 minutes before tip off he was in a station wagon driving very fast on the way to the forum when he had to stop at a red light. this was in 73. once in the early 90's he was walking in spandex so probably coming from a health club around the corner of ventura and sepulveda. you couldnt miss him.

Jordan best ever no doubt. Come on guys. Don't even screw around. Chamberlain was good..and dominant..like you said..around the basket. Jordan dominated the entire floor. He did not have a weakness! NONE. Any challenge that was put forth...he mastered.

Unbeatable sports record: J. Owen Wilson's (whoever the F that was) 36 triples in one season.

Some of these centers were great ballplayers. But give me a guard that can pace the game...create the action...create opportunites. Penetrate, get open..pop jumpers...shoot 3's...take it to the rack. Rather than a guy that sets up 2 feet from the basket..catches and spins for a dunk or a hook shot. No comparison.

Oscar Robertson averaging a triple double for an entire season is up there, too.

the next time we IM we are gonna have to discuss this and i am going to have to tell you why Hilo Boy is CORRECT

jordan is NOT the best player of all time - and he's not even #2 (would probably put elgin baylor, magic johnson or even kareem #2 ahead of MJ)

I went to U. of Kansas with Wilt. He was a soph when I was a frshman. In those days freshman could not play varsity ball. WIlts first game was at Allen field house about 1 year old at that ime. place was sold out 18,000. he scored 52 first game unreal. that was the year they lost to no car in the ncaa,s n.c. was 32-0 that year I think. It was great. I had a few claseswith him he was neat. WIll always remember game 1. who ever started the tread thanks for reminding me of those days. long time ago 1957.

Cmon guys.......This pic tells it all........Look at the stiffs Wilt played against back in the day.It was about the equivalent of some of us playing against a group of little leaguers.Yes, there were a few solid guys, but for the most part it was a man among boys back then. Wilt was ahead of his time. I am a firm believer that some most eras in the past couldn't match up with today's players, especially in the NFL & NBA. Baseball players/eras would have a much better chance of mathching up with today's players than football or basketball....

on top of everything else...

The Dipper averaged over 48 mins a game that year (remember overtime)!!!

Playing in crappy gyms, with virtually nonexistent training and medical care, travel that no player today would tolerate...

and Wilt averaged over 48 mins a game!!!

Shaq couldn't play 48 mins for one game...and Wilt did it for an entire season!!!

case closed.
