LEON SMITH
CRACKSMOKERS OF THE NBA
SMITH, LEON
Former King High School basketball star Leon Smith is in trouble with the law again, officials said Friday. A judge issued an arrest warrant for Smith on Thursday after he allegedly violated conditions of his probation, said Gale Paradise, spokeswoman for the Cook County adult probation department. Smith, a former Dallas Mavericks player, pleaded guilty to criminal damage of property on May 16 and was sentenced to 18 months' probation. He allegedly broke the windows out of a car owned by Vanessa Pondexter, his ex-girlfriend's mother. Smith is required to report to his probation officer, attend weekly counseling sessions and obey an order of protection, Paradise said. "The reason for the warrant is a failure to comply," she said, refusing to elaborate except to say he reported to his probation officer. Smith also was accused of threatening ex-girlfriend Cappie Pondexter with a gun, but that charge was dropped in the plea agreement. The protection order requires him to stay away from the Pondexters for two years.
