BALTIMORE - George Steinbrenner isn’t paying $200 million in player salaries to watch his New York Yankees sputter along in last place.

The outspoken owner waited all of two weeks before demanding that his team start winning — or else.
Miguel Tejada hit his eighth career grand slam, and the Baltimore Orioles roughed up Kevin Brown and completed a three-game sweep of New York with an 8-4 victory Sunday. The Yankees (4-8) have dropped four straight and eight of 10 overall.

“Enough is enough. I am bitterly disappointed as I’m sure all Yankee fans are by the lack of performance by our team,” Steinbrenner said in a statement issued immediately after the game.

“It is unbelievable to me that the highest-paid team in baseball would start the season in such a deep funk. They are not playing like true Yankees. They have the talent to win and they are not winning. I expect Joe Torre, his complete coaching staff and the team to turn this around.”

Torre, who held a brief team meeting after the game, did not take Steinbrenner’s comments lightly.

Just got back from the game. Unlike yesterday you really never heard the pro-Yankee part of the crowd get into it as the O's got up quickly 6-0. Was very nice.

I'm sure it won't take long to make the change..especially if Boston climbs up the standings.

Hate it for Torre, but he knew what he was getting into.

Torre has the easiest managerial job in Major league history, a monkey could have got the yankees to the division crown the past 8 years...no offense i'm sure Joe is a great guy but c'mon.

Sorry...but if I"m firing someone I'm targeting Cashman. Torre has to put out what Cashman brings in and the boss pays for.

Brown is a bust...I"m sorry. Leiber was a bust....Vasquez....

Congrats on getting A-Rod...but what good has that done? He can't field a ground ball anymore.

Tanyon Sturtze...nuff said. Cashman should be fired just on the principal that this moron is still playing.

I wondered what they were thinking throwing Wright all that money...He's been a very big disappointment most of his career...He may turn out okay but i really didn't think that was a good move.

Excellent point, I was thinking the same thing, anyone available is either an ex-manager already fired or an unproven rookie minor league manager. Torre will be there all year and natrually the Yanks will turn it around. Starting tomorrow they host the Drays - just what the doctor ordered.

The Big Unit aside, their starters average at best and their middle relief and set-up men are poor. You can't win consistently with that.

That exactly how it can shape up. I would not be surprised to see the Yanks finish 4th in the east behind Toronto.
