Yea i wondered the same thing...they said they wanted someone close to pope John Paul II to "finish his mission"...as if to say he was close to acheiving some goal and then they would go in a different direction after this one dies....kinda sounds like a interim Pope :icon_conf

i dont mean to insult anyone. i am not catholic so, this is not an untouchable subject to me. it just seems odd to me that they would select a 78 year old guy...that's all.

maybe i'm all wet.

Maybe he is just an interm guy to finish up what the last pope wanted to do after all he was pretty much his right hand man. The pope will never be under 60 in my lifetime

It would seem a younger pope would give them a more solid future.

Younger, even at 40 yrs, a person likely does not have the experience/maturity needed I assume and the Catholic stance seems to still be that the older generations (Elders) serve a great purpose and I can appreciate that. We should never underestimate our Elders.

First they chose an older pope because they don't want to have another 25 year term on another pope. Also he did not chose John Paul III because the one he chose was a name after the pope who was known for peace.
