Bought a VAIO in 2001 and it crashed all the damn time. It was just crazy.

The quality might have improved or it could have been that I just got a bad one, but I wouldn't ever recommend a VAIO to anyone.

I recently bought an Averatec, and this thing is fast, but it will just freeze on me about once a week. It's not as bad as the VAIO, but pretty irritating. Especially when you're trying to get a wager in and BANG ... you have to restart it. The 5 minutes I lose restarting it can easily cost me $20 each time.

Doug, I have had several Vaios and never a single problem...however I think you can do better than the deal you mentioned...

If you can find a Frye's close to you go there and talk with them, they have incredible prices for all needs and budgets.

I'll check that out.

From Dell's page I get

model 2200 739
upgrade to pro 79
" to 512 mb 100
" to 40 GB 49
add burner 29

I added 4year service for 290 ( 100 rebate). totalling 1284 ( 1184 with rebate. I would also get accident coverage, printer, and shipping.

For those who missed the three day custom-to-order laptop deal from OfficeDepot last week, they are running a similar deal all week starting 3/20/05. It is $100 more than last week's deal, but its base specs offer more.

Presario R3000z Notebook:
*AMD Athlon XP-M Processor 2800+
*256MB DDR memory
*40GB hard drive
*DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive (upgrade of last week's)
*Windows XP Home
*15" screen
*12-cell battery (upgrade of last week's)
*FREE
HP 3847 color printer (upgrade of last week's)

Configuration code will be 03018562.

$859.99 - $30.00 Compaq MIR - $50.00
HP Printer MIR - $100.00 OD MIR - $100.00 OD MIR - $50.00 instant savings - $30.00 printer instant savings = $499.99

buying a laptop is all about the quality of the processor, not just the brand name. The tech geeks will have their own opinions, but mine is that the latest generation of Centrino or Pentium are the best. I've had laptops with Celeron and Athlon processors and they didn't perform nearly as well. I know they have newer versions of those processors, but like CincyHugg, I believe in the old axiom, "Fool me once shame on you...fool me twice shame on me. "

That WSOX deal looks like a heckuva bargain to me. All that with a Pentium processor? I'll take five of em.

My Dell laptop is a p4 2.4, 1gb ram, 9600 vid card, 40gb HD, etc... After about 6 months of use, it gets blue screen all the time. I can barely do anything without it crashing.

As a disclaimer, I used the hell out of it for the 6 months writing software and doing database type things. But I have seen similar things happen with friends Dell laptops who dont use them as hard as me.

One company I have been pleased with as a cheap mass-producer of PCs is HP. I hear their customer support is not very good, but the product is great. And with a little reading on the internet, you can pretty much resolve all your problems by yourself.

Toshiba makes the best laptops in my opinion. They are known to for their workhorse sturdiness and quality. I have a Toshiba Satellite and it works flawlessly. Never has given me a problem and the display still looks new. They are a bit pricey but I guess there's a reason behind it. But look around and you can still find some great deals. I was close to getting a Dell laptop but decided on the Toshiba. The battery life of the Dell is its best feature. One thing Toshiba knows is laptops. If I'm not mistaken, they were THE first laptop company and still regarded by many as the best.

Funny you mention Battery life, because that was the first thing to go on my laptop. I HAVE to use it plugged in now. When I was searching around the net to see if there was a fix, I realized it was a common problem with the dells.

I'm a big fan of the Vaio's (especially those with the 16" screen). We have about 30 at the office, and they have held up very well.
