Somewhat surprising Nolan Ryan has stats that hold up pretty well against Roger Clemens, Ryan was much wilder, but gave up less hits and had an identical ERA..

Rocket W-329, ERA 3.18, K's 4,317, 7-time Cy Young
Ryan....W-324 ERA 3.19, K's 5,714, 7-no hitters

I can't believe how close these two are...I didn't look at Carlton but i know his win total is very similar...gonna take a look now:digit:

That's where the comparision ends. Nolan Ryan was never the dominate pitcher Clemens is. Ryan's 292 losses puts him just a little over a .500 pitcher which is what he was in my book. He also pitched in a pitcher friendlier era as opposed to Clemens pitching in a hitters era.

I never really considered Ryan at the top of the list, yes he was a phenom who threw 4 more no-hitters than anyone but he was for the most part a .500 pitcher, and Baltimore killed Ryan, maybe that tainted my opinion on Nolan some...

He did play for some very bad teams atleast half of his stellar career , take away all those losses and he's almost identical to Clemans and Carlton...

Amazing stat, Ryan never pitched a 9 inning game without allowing a walk...his whole career.

It's funny Carlton's name comes up. He was my boyhood hero and he is my favorite player of any era in any sport. Jman I could get Phillies radio in down here and never missed a start of his....static and all... lol it seems so long ago.

Carlton hung on way too long though, he was done by 38 but hung around til he was 43, the American League years were painful.

Never been a big Clemens fan, but the numbers don't lie. The comparison with Ryan is not a close as it looks. Ryan pitched in a more pitcher friendly era with less offence. Ryan also pitched in the most pitcher friendly park most of his career.
Just like it wouldn't be fair to compare Canseco to other 400+ homer players from the 70's and 80's.

Man I hated that guy. Me and a friend would argue non stop as kids who was better and I will never forget his Dad saying Palmer was. I got my redemption years later when Sporting News put out their top 100 pitchers and Carlton was like 28 and Palmer was around 89. It was wonderful. Even as a kid I knew he was full of bs.

Jim Palmer could have easily won 5 Cy Young Awards....he lost to Sparky Lyle one year and in 1982 it came down to him and Milwaukee's Pete Vuckovich, it was Big Jim's last hurrah....Palmer won a world series game in 3 different decades...66, 70, 83 :drink:

Hands down AL pitcher of the 1970's:103631605 , Seaver was the NL pitcher of the 70's...it seemed like their were more elite pitchers back then , I never would have imagined anyone winning 7 Cy Young's :icon_conf

19-5 1.74 223 k's
