Climate- Takes a year or so to get use to, but after that it is not bad

Cities- I live in SW Florida and I know everywhere from Tampa to Naples pretty well. I prefer the west coast style of life, it is more laid back.

Real Estate- Is at an alltime high w/ no end in site. Everyone is moving here and wants to be close to the water. Move in land and you can still find decent deals.

Schools- If you have kids, you will most likely want to go private. Atleast around here and Tampa the schools are very weak.

Job Opps- I dont know what you guy do, but the job market is OK from what I hear.

Any other questions let me know.

I have a house in Weston Hills....real nice...lots of golf...but COL is high and real estate is sky high in that area. A multitude of job opportunities there as well. Marc Lawrence and Marino live in the area.

dont do it. too hot, and lots of alligators....

Agree about the climate...hot and humid in the summer, and it rains every other day in the summer (just like the tropics). I always have the air on, about 8 months a year. But it beats the snow and dramatic seasonal changes found in a state like Penna. where I lived previously.

The Gators are scared the death of us...and always run away from you! Nothing to worry about. It's the college football team with the same name that could hurt you financially.

i just moved to the tampa area in mid-december from iowa. i love it, so far.
real estate is high, but if you have the time and ability to scope out an area
before you move, i think you could find something fairly reasonable. good luck.

Overview of the St. Petersburg, FL Economy

Strategically located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, is St. Petersburg, the State’s fourth largest city. It is also the gateway to Florida’s High Tech Corridor and the hub of one of the most progressive regions in the United States for business. The “Sunshine City”, as it is known, has a long tradition of thoughtful planning, outstanding infrastructure, rich cultural amenities and cooperative government. This tradition is what makes business owners flock here and residents beam with pride. St. Petersburg, roughly 58 square miles and surrounded by sparkling blue water on three sides, has 234 miles of exquisite shoreline. With an average temperature of 73.7º and an average of 361 days of sunshine a year, there’s no question about why this is the “Sunshine City”. But this sub-tropical paradise is also home to a diverse and resilient industry base and strong, supportive job market.

St. Petersburg’s major industries, marine science, light manufacturing, financial services, information technology, and medical technology, have all found the City an inviting and invigorating business address. The vibrant Tampa Bay area is home to over 2.3 million people, making it the largest metropolitan area in Florida and the 13th largest metropolitan area in the United States. The region’s gross metropolitan product, almost $80 billion, has grown by 97.1% since 1990 making it the 25th largest economy in the United States.

St. Petersburg is one of the easiest and most inexpensive places to conduct your business and a place where you can take advantage of the hottest labor market in the U.S. The City’s greatest attribute is without a doubt, its workforce With over 1.2 million people, the region’s workforce pool is highly productive. St. Petersburg is part of the #1 metro area in the U.S. for job growth, with a job growth rate two times the national average and was named #1 market in the Southeast for job announcements by Southern Business & Development magazine. In addition to this, the County has the highest workforce to population ratio in the region (51.32%) and Florida is a right-to-work state by constitutional provision. Poised to become the nation’s next major market, the Tampa Bay area was ranked the #1 Best Place for Business and Careers in Florida by Forbes magazine and the Milken Institute (#17 in the United States), the #1 Mega-Market of the Year by Southern Business and Development Magazine and the #19 Hottest City for Manufacturing Expansion and Relocation by Expansion Management Magazine.

The City’s superb transportation, telecommunication and utility infrastructure allows business to get done efficiently and quickly. In fact, nearly half of all U.S. freight destinations are within a day’s drive of St. Petersburg. The City is within minutes of three international airports, two deepwater ports, rail lines and an extensive network of easily accessible interstates, expressways and major highways. All this activity makes the Tampa Bay area, the second largest and wealthiest market in the Southeastern U.S. (SMM), a favorite of commerce, but it is equally a favorite of those in pursuit of the highest possible quality of life

My 2 cents.

Have an investment/vacation condo in Naples right off Route 75.

My son goes to Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton and just purchased (doesnt every 19 year old) in Boynton Beach, down the block from Pete Rose's Restaurant.

And we just bought an investment pre construction condo in Orlando.

And last but not least, my best friend moved to Ft. Myers in 1998 and got into real estate. Not much needs to be said.
He is kicking ass and loving life.
Property has sky rocketed and hoping that it doesnt stop.

The baby boomers will be heading down (hopefully including me) in the next
3-5 years and it should continue to grow. East will meet west so plenty of investment opportunity still available.

My son loves it down there otherwise he would not have purchased a townhouse and we are from New Jersey. Never coming home and is gonna settle in down there with a great start after college.

If I could sell my business now and get a head start I would do so right now.
Simpler life, healthier living and gonna be plenty of work opportunities with all the building and people moving down there.

I need a 5-7 year plan and hope for the best. Unless somebody wants to buy me out now.

I prefer the west coast over the east coast since I have become familiar with both now. More midwest people, not as crowded.
Seem the entire northeast travels to the east and midwest travels to the west.
I kind of like the west if you know what I mean.
But I love my customers up here on the northeast. :lolBIG:

Wish you the best of luck regardless, but now seems like as great a time as any.

St. Pete is a nice area. Close to Tampa and close to Clearwater and Sarasota areas. I live just south of St. Pete. If I were moving from up north into this area, I would pick St. Pete for the cost of living and it's central location. It is also gorgeous and has lots of babes..lol What more can you ask for?

I have been ALL over this country and there is no better place to live than the west coast of Florida in my opinion.

I live inland about 25 miles north of Tampa and the heat and humidity are WAY overstated on being terrible. The midwest is more humid in the summer!!

Now if you go south 130 miles OR inland, than the heat could be a problem.

I was in Miami last week and it was NOTICABLY more humid than Tampa.

If your from the midwest, I would highly recommed the east part of the Tampa area.....very midwest like and the people are great.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and I hope I never see snow again for the rest of my life. Every climate has at least 3 months of non-ideal weather, either too hot or too cold. You have to decide how you want to spend those 3 months, shoveling snow or sweating. Keep in mind the sweating really isn't that bad when you do it on a beach.
