I see now GVR is opening their poker room. I know there will always be poker players but today it seems that everyone and their mother, literally, is playing cards. Is this a fad and in a few years many players will disapear or are we now going to see many long term card players?

The current surge in popularity will reach a peak sooner or later but poker is definitely here to stay (always has been).

Its a fad with many many 1 and done depositors. As long as its availible on the internet there will be more players than the old backroom games but IMO its already peaked. The only thing i see that could bring another rush of players would be the U.S. govt ANNOUNCING its legal. As long as its in this "grey" area there are a number of people who just are not going to try it...ive had a number of people in the last few months also who asked me how to get into it online then the next time i see them they say "that place you told me about wanted me to send my money to costa rica, gibralter, etc! no way im doing that"....so there is still an untapped market but without the govt telling them its okay (and god only knows how they could possibly think that makes it more safe) i dont see them playing any time soon.
Also tex holdem is a very weird game...it looks INCREDIBLY easy on tv etc but when they get there and take some of the bad beats they throw in the towel very quickly.... it maybe some years before we see less than 2000 people entering the wsop again but i doubt you'll find 50,000 players a night on party poker 2 years from now

as all agree - it is here to stay

but sooner or later (if it hasn't already) it will reach it's zenith and then lose some popularity

having said that - it is going to be SCARY how many people play in the WSOP Main Event. EASILY over 5,000 and my guess it could even top 8,000

think about that for a second

we are talking $80 MILLION in entry fees and the winner will become the #1 money winner of all-time even if they have never won $1 before the WSOP

It will have legs, but all these places opening up rooms isn't sustainable. Some places will have better rooms and be known for it while many of these me-too rooms will close up. Places that take the game and its customers seriously will always have demand while others that just open it as amenity to keep customers from wandering elsewhere won't ever see good returns on a room and will eventually close up. You will see this offline and online. Amazing to think someone only starts playing because their sportsbook offers a game. You might win a few converts there, but if people aren't out to play with the best poker-only sites I have a hard time imagining that ever making up a core customer for poker. Those people will mostly treat it like a fad and when they leave the games will be reduced and become much tougher to beat. In any case though poker will always be far bigger than it was a few years ago.

if you want a comparison - think Low Carb diets

they went from practically nothing to ALL THE RAGE and now they are starting to lose some of their luster. they will always be around - but this fad has hit its zenith and is not leveling off at a pace where it will be for some time

Winky- They are capping the Main Event at 6600 I was told. Still should be about 13 million or so to the winner.
