Unless you play live against good/decent players you can not measure your skill...Live poker is MUCH harder then online there is a ton more pressure and people can try to read your face...So unless you have played Live you cannot know what your true skill level is

IMHO

It is basically two different games if the truth be told.

If your a good online poker player, you are just that, a good online poker
player.

But, chances are if your a farily constant winner online, you are still pretty half-*ss decent player in the live world.................just maybe to a lesser degree.

It could also work the other way, one could actually be even BETTER at a live game than they are online.

But agree with you, success at one does not automatically make one successful in the other.

I think the one reason that I personally may be better online is that one does not have to have the PATIENCE online as much as LIVE because........1. Games move faster.......2. Able to play 2-3 games at once.........3. Able to do other constructive things well playing.

Overall, I like online much better, but still have a love for live tournaments on many occassions.

My experience has been that live games are looser. There are also factors that make live play more enjoyable, like the casino atmosphere, player interaction, the occasional cute waitress, etc. On a per-hand basis, I can earn more at a live game.

I earn much more online, though. Even though the games are somewhat tighter, the fact that I can multi-table and play 50 hands/hour at each one means that my bottom line is much higher. Other plusses: no 2-hour drive, no smoke, no toking the dealer. The waitress thing is in flux.

Another great thing about online poker is the tremendous overlays on tourneys that can be found on a daily basis............which very very very seldom can be found in the casinos, if ever.

Nothing like live play...Good story from the other night at Foxwwods at my 5-10 table.2 guys sitting side by side go to the river 3 jacks on the board they start raising back and forth after each raise they would both lean in and read the board again,it was getting tense both players had about 250 each strung out in front of them about a yard long. One player ran out of chips and called the other, and he turned over the 4th jack...The other guy looked in horror as he looked at his cards and then announced he thought he had the other jack but it was a king.He hadn't looked at his cards since they were dealt. You could have pushed the guy over with a feather...Nobody at the table could look at each other, everybody felt uneasy like someone farted during a moment of silence.

I find LIMIT hold'em very boring compared to NO LIMIT.

Maybe because much better at NO LIMIT.

Do you honestly care though? Talk like this feeds egos, but is irrelevant. Poker skills aren't really important at the end of the day, winning money is. Never ever forget you will win far more money over your lifetime from your opponents bad play than from your good play.

Moral of the story is you can all say your are a better poker player than me, but if I have the money instead of the skills I am far happier. If online games make me more money, why even worry about how good I might be in a live game?

Yup...I just learned the game over the last 4 mos. Read and re-read 1 book and played a lot of practice hands online.I find that if you play really tight ( I have actually gone over 2 hrs with out playing a hand pre-flop) and waited to get the right run of cards.Play quality hands not quanity hands makes huge diff.

I hate to burst your bubble, but if you went 2 hours without playing a hand, you would be absolutely run over by a good player.

The blinds alone would kill you to death.

I don't agree. If you don't have the cards to play you shouldn't be in the hand. Two hours without seeing a flop (except for big blind I assume) may seem like a long time, but in a live game that is only 8-10 rounds. You wouldn't give that much up to the blinds, only $70 in a 2-5 NL game and $300 in a 10-20 NL game. If you play junk you could easily lose that much with one second best flush or an ace-junk.

Christopher Brian Moneymaker is the 2003 World Series of Poker Champion. Moneymaker qualified for the WSOP by winning a $40 online satellite tournament. Not too bad for $2,500,000 in winnings.

Never played a live game and holds THE Bracelet.

Thats right, and in a loose 5-10 kill pot game with pots that avg 100- 200$. 1 win gets you back in the ballgame easily and if the starting hands start running your way you can be up a couple of hundren in a half a dozen hands.

You are stealing a few blinds though, are you not?
<!-- / message -->
Its tough to steal blinds in a loose game...I mean you can't rape the willing and if you try you better have half a hard on.

I mean I'm not going to raise on the button with 7,5o only to be re-raised by the small blind with 8,3o.

I am also talking limit hold 'em.

WildBill, your post was kinda vague for "me". I understand what your saying about making money, but you have to have some established or learned talent (poker/skills/patience etc etc..) to get that money in any aspect of life

I think it all basicly comes down to self confidence, patience and the ability to read your oponants.. Playing live or online makes no difference in my opinion, either you have it, or you don't...
