last time it happened, a matchup between 300-game winners that featured California's Don Sutton against Minnesota's Steve Carlton on Aug. 4, 1987.

I think Sutton was actually involved in 3 or 4 such games. 300 vs. 300

Man, I forgot Carlton pitched for Minny at one time. He wasn't on their playoff roster that year, was he??

He was with the Twinkies in 1987, being traded during the season, but wasn't on the post season roster...he had a cup of coffee with the Twins in 1988 as well, but was released early that season.

Great memories on that answer.

I was on a team that won the very prestigious University of Illinois Sports Trivia contest one year with that exact question in a tie game last question for all the marbles! very exciting.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

You're right. I saw Sutton (Ångels) vs. Seaver(Bosox) at Ånaheim Stadium in '86. I believe Sutton also faced Phil Niekro during that same time period

This will be the last time in MLB history that 2 300 game winners face off against each other, unless Maddox and Clemens face off later this season.

You can mark that down.

Also in the Atl - Stl game....two of best managers ever. both with over 2000 wins in their careers!!
first confrontation of managers with 2,000 regular-season wins since 1950.
Baseball has not staged its postseason since 1987 without at least one of the two men involved.

Houston just can't score...look for Clemens to be in Boston or New York come mid-late August...
