Washington +1.08 over LOS ANGELES <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
We’ll gladly take our chances here on the Nationals with Esteban Loiaza throwing against one Scott Erickson. Erickson is a guy that’s worn out and his days as a major league pitcher are extremely numbered. It says here that he’s released by the all-star game or sooner. Erickson has a better shot of hitting a homerun than having a quality start. Meanwhile, the Nationals are 13-12 and own a .500 record on the road. Loaiza has pitched very well both at home and on the road. He’s lasted into the seventh inning in three of his five starts and is coming off an eight inning, four hit performance against the Phillies. This equation is a simple one and it suggests that when Erickson is the chalk, bet against him. Play: Washington +1.08 (Risking 1.5 units).

Toronto +1.35 over BALTIMORE

Jays rookie lefthander Gustavo Chacin has been nothing short of brilliant all season long and is absolutely worth a play here. All Chacin does is throws strikes and win games. He’s 3-0 on the road this year with a 1.42 ERA. He recently threw a two hit shutout in Texas and he’s allowed just 26 hits in 33 innings of work. It’s not customary for us to go against a hot team like the Orioles, however, when a take-back is offered with a quality lefthander like Chacin going the wager is certainly a good one. Rodrigo Lopez is off to a good start, however, he’s very hittable. His fastball tops out at 88 MPH and it’s not unusual to see him get knocked around. He has a career ERA of 4.40 and the opposition is hitting .260 against him this season. Lastly, the Jays have won five of six and are now 14-12 on the season and that includes 10 games with the Yanks and Bosox. Play: Toronto +1.35 (Risking 1.5 units).

L.A Angels –1½ +1.30 over SEATTLE

Ryan Franklin started the year in the pen with two relief appearances and than made three consecutive good starts in which he pitched into the eighth inning in all of them. Those three games were against Kansas City, the White Sox and Oakland. That trifecta, while it looked pretty good on paper was not a difficult one and as soon as Franklin took a step up in class against the Rangers he got belted hard. Franklin has walked more batters than he’s struck out this year and for the second consecutive game he’ll face a tough offense. He started the year in the pen for a reason and that reason is that he couldn’t cut it as a starter but the Mariners needed someone to fill in. His confidence had to take a huge jolt in his last appearance in Arlington and the Mariners seldom give anyone solid run support. Seattle is 1-5 against lefties and they also return home from a six game trip tonight. Jarrod Washburn is well suited to pitch at Safeco Field. It’s a pitchers park and Washburn is a flyball pitcher. He’s 1-0 in five starts with a 3.38 ERA and that includes two games against Texas, and one against the Yanks, Cleveland and Oakland. He beat the A’s 1-0. Angels in a good spot here. Play: Los Angeles –1½ +1.30 (Risking 1.5 units).
