The Kentucky Derby is the premier event in thoroughbred horse racing. Held at Historic Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, the race has all the pageantry and excitement of some of the biggest sporting events in the world. The race will be heldthis year on Saturday May 7<SUP>th</SUP>, 2005. Last year, this is where Smart Jones began his amazing run at the Triple Crown of Horse racing, ultimately falling one race short. Who will be the big winner of this year’s race? There are already several horses that have had great stakes races early in the season, and have a great chance at winning the Derby. Let's take a look at some of the favorites.<o></o>

Bellamy Road -Had his first serious work since his Wood Memorial win, breezing 5 furlongs in 1:02.80 at Churchill Downs on Thursday. Widelyconsidered by many experts and insidersthe favorite to win the Derby.<o></o>

High Fly -Was credited with a 5-furlong breeze in 1:06.60 at Churchill recently. Has the strengthand style to win the Derby.<o></o>

High Limit -Stepped up to run second in the Blue Grass Stakes in his fourth career start. Trainer Bobby Frankel was looking more for seasoning that day than he was for a victory.<o></o>

Bandini -Faced down what was supposed to be the toughest field in a Derby prep during the Blue Grass Stakes, and did so in dominating fashion. Trainer Todd Pletcher has saddled nine Derby starters and comes into this year's race with his strongest hand yet.<o></o>

Afleet Alex -Arkansas Derby win silenced questions about his stamina and whether or not that lung infection that plagued him in the Rebel Stakes was for real. His winning time of 1:48 4/5 for the 11/8 miles also was three-fifths of a second faster than what Smarty Jones ran in winning the race in 2004.<o></o>

Noble Causeway -Covered 5 furlongs in 1:04.60 and will have three-time Derby-winning jockey Gary Stevens in the saddle on May 7.<o></o>

Sun King -Lumbered home fourth after traveling wide throughout the Blue Grass Stakes. Like High Limit, however, he may have needed the experience against a tougher group.<o></o>

Consolidator -Never made the lead and, in turn, never threatened in the Blue Grass Stakes. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas is still a master at getting horses to rebound off bad outings and, given Consolidator's inconsistent nature, it would not be a shock to see him turn things around two weeks from now.<o></o>
