Its a normal practice for many, many years, you go to the restaurant, have lunch/dinner etc and we leave tips, even when we're gambling at the Casinos.

My question is, when did this start, and whats the real purpose or should we.

When we go to the bank and do a transaction, we get good service, but, do we tip.

When we go to the mall/store etc we shop, get good assistance, do we tip?

When we go to confession, we get assistance, do we tip?

How many of us drop a tip on a flight to the attendant?? hhmm

why are we tipping the dealers, when we win, we enter the establishment with THEM having the edge on us, why are we tipping them.

Just an open question. hope I dont offend any way who gets tips on their job.

I don't know how the practice started, but now that tipping your server is the norm, failure to do so will get you real crappy service. I worked in the business for years ... the bigger the tipper, the better the service.

As for tipping the dealer, your protests should have nothing to do with the house having an edge. After all, it's not like the dealer takes the rake. But some dealers go out of their way to be more friendly, or more entertaining. Why not tip?

I know many professional slot/videopoker players that do NOT tip(or if they do, VERY small), feeling they lose to big of a percentage of their profits on the small edge that they may have.

I certainly do not avocate this practice and consider myself an above average toker in situations such as these, but there are certainly times when casino employees do expect to much on certain jackpots on machines.

Good and interesting subject Jarbo, one that should garnish some interesting replies.

X, youre right but, I'm just thinking, you enter a casino with a hundred dollars in your pocket, before you play anything, you kinda only have like 70 bucks, and then you win a hand, a number on roulette and you leave a tip, kinda crazy huh?

I don't mean to offend anyone but its a real rip off

Example

Down here in Costa Rica the "tip" is nothing more than a TAX as its mandatory and included in the check that you get (or bill , whatever you call it)

why? cause otherwise noone would tip, so it has to be mandatory and in the end you have to pay it whether its good service or bad service

another rip off is that line of "x % is mandatory if party is y number of people or more" so whats the deal with that!

people should always be paid accordingly as to avoid ambiguities like that, for example

supose I get paid 2 dollars/ hour, what am I to do then? Do the best I possibly can and HOPE that with the tips I will be able to pay my bills? what if I leave in "stingy town" where tips are small

if I wanted a commision I would be a salesman of avon products!

A good tip will get you farther with comps and in the event of a beef (many in craps less in Bj and poker) you WILL recieve the benefit of the doubt from dealers and management as well. I didn't set the system up, but I don't think too many dealers would be there without any tips. Would you rather have them get a commission off your losses, you'd get rude guys just speed dealing BJ laughing at you, so it kind of works out pretty good.

Being a dealer myself--- I'm glad someone is curious about the topic of tipping. Dealers make minimum wage, plus tips. As dealers, we want all of the players to win so that they will come across with tips. Remember that pit bosses, hosts, and mangement want the players to lose because they are accountable for the "hold" to the owners (who give out bonus checks). The bottom line is that dealers are the only friends the players have when playing table games. It's time for more players to treat dealers like friends. I can say with great confidence that less than 40% of the people who play blackjack tip the dealer. God bless the people who do tip!!!

Most casino dealers share tips, but the one I work for, and a few others keep their own tips. Players can always ask the dealer how tips are handled. Players will generally get better service in a casino where dealers keep their own tips. Regardless of which casino players are in, tipping is greatly appreciated because we depend on tips to survive. Being a dealer is much like being a waiter or bartender. Most people won't go out to eat if they can not afford to tip the food server; the same should apply to gambling in casinos. We dealers call tippers "Live" or "George", and we call non-tippers "Stiffs." I don't mind dealing to Stiffs as long as they don't expect me to do anything but deal the game. There's nothing worse than dealing to a table full of Stiffs who want to be catered to, entertained, and talked to for the entire hour, but none of them are courteous enough to tip. Most Stiffs just don't know the etiquette of tipping because management doesn't allow dealers to encourage players to tip. A George is a high-roller who hands out hundred, five hundred, and thousand dollar chips to dealers. Georges are rare, but they're out there and are held in the highest regard by dealers. These are the players who make pit bosses wish they were still dealers. If a player wants to be considered Live, all they have to do is put the dealer up for .50 cents or a dollar on most hands they play (doesn't seem like much, but it adds up quickly). Don't hand the money in; bet it for the dealer. Players can ask the dealer how to bet the tip if they don't already know. Players should definitely not wait until the dealer goes on break before they finally give a tip; this isn't a cab ride, it's per-hand service. Bottom line: Don't be Stiff, be Live, and your casino experience is guaranteed to be much more enjoyable.

Way back when, tips were put on the table or in a box BEFORE the meal

The server would see it, and would know it was going to be his IF he served the table properly

It's basically what Shrink does with the guys who ref the ODU games, I guess.

Interesting site i found,

http://www.cocktaildoll.com/cocktaildolltippingtips.htm

Allways find it good policy to tip the cocktail waitress really well when she brings the first round especially, especially in Vegas where your drinks are free. A little bit can go a long way to getting your drink on well. So budget an extra five here or their at the Nugget and you won't be dissapointed. Your tips with dealers and waitresses especially downtown will go a long way.

Quote:
Common ways people try to weasel out of tipping.

If you must stiff, for whatever reason, just do it. Don't tell me that you lost all your money, that you don't have change, that your husband has the tip and he'll be right back. Why? Because every time I bring a drink I'm hoping to make money, and if you're not going to give me a tip, the last thing I want to do is stand there and waste more time. If you never intended to tip me, just say thank you. Give me the courtesy to move on to someone who will tip me. If you did intend to tip me but awkwardly find yourself without a tip when I bring your drink, just say thank you, then either come find me or wait for me to come around again to give me a tip. This happens very rarely, but when it does, it's very much appreciated. (However, don't say something like, "You ran away too fast before I could tip you." This is a very self-serving comment, intended to blame me in an attempt to save yourself embarrassment. When you order a drink you should start getting your tip out so you'll be ready when I bring your drink. It always amazes me when people act so surprised when I bring their drink...you knew you ordered a drink, so have your tip ready!)

Those are some strong words, but correct me if I'm wrong, is it not the job of the waitress to bring you your drink in the first place?

It'a funny how those people who are stiffs and eat at the same establishments don't realize the kind of foreign substances that make their way into their drinks/food. :finger:

Not Me. For the record I post under one handle only JARBO.

This is an interesting topic. Tipping in other palces of business vs. casino's is very different.

As I dont go out on a regular basis nowadays, tips are insignificant. However, let me tell you from experience that tipping goes the whole way. When I was Bookmaking, you were expected to have money and spread it around, even though times, the tank was empty.

Nearly always I was completely over the top, big tips for the staff, drinks for the whole restaurant, a meal paid here and there. I can honestly say, although I never believed in that mentality, it worked wonders.

Even today, 10 years later, it is an unbelieveable situation for me to walk in some London restaurants and me and my guests to be treated with such reverence.

One of my betting shops was very close to a top class restaurant, and I used to take great pride in me and my guests been given seats over cueing film stars etc. What people didnt know is, I used to lend, and sometimes give these people money , for one reason or another, without question.

Although now happily living in Ireland and enjoying life to the full, being treated like a King in these places was something to be relished.
