Serious Question On Us Racing

Over the last couple of months I have been betting and laying US racing with mixed results. Once again, there is a difference between British and American betting. Bottom line is, British, and I will also say Australian odds, are based on Bookmakers opinions, whereas the US racing is more prone to the Tote way of doing things.

The problem is. If you had a 6 runner race, in Britain the Bookmakers would show you the true odds through the open market they work in. The US market is controlled on course through, if not majority, certainly a big percentage of uninformed Punters.

What I am trying to get at here is, a US claiming race, if under British standards, would show that half the field are 100/1 shots, yet because people are on course and fancy the name or whatever, they can distort a weak market.

I suppose my questions, are in fact really mercenary. Is there a site that can give, like Britain, a weight difference for all Horses, is there a place that can show you who these donkeys are.

I would like to add, anybody involved in Horseracing need to seriously find a way of getting on Betfair. Please give some answers, even if they are laughable.

And so it goes......

So just so I have it right, your question deals w/ "true odds"? Horses in the US going off at 10-1, but in reality to the field they are running against should be in the neighborhood of let's say 40-1, right? And the bookmakers in both Great Britian and Austrailia give the the "true odds" of the horse relative to the field they are running in? I just wanted to make sure this is the question before I attempt to possibly answer your question.

Thanks Wil, and yes, you are right Cadillac man, horses in the US go off at 20/1 would be 50/1 + in Britain, awaiting for your insight.

The tracks here in the US act as agents and out of the pools take their cut along w/ the state taking their's as well. Since the odds here are figured by dividing the amount wagered on a given horse into the total amount wagered, less the amount deducted by the track and state law. These two components lower the "true value" of say a realistic 50-1 to about 20-1 in comparison to the field they are running against. I don't know of any website that would give the "true odds" of a horse excluding the takeout. I know certain states, like the NYRA (New York Racing Association) have taken measure's on reducing their takeout. But it boils down to the track and the government getting their big cut of the pie and the players left with crumbs when it's all said and done. It seems like Great Britian and Australia have figured out a way for the players to possibly get a bigger share, but I'm sure there's also a way their respective governments are getting a good chunk as well.

Also, as a side note, with the simulcasting we have here on track attendence is really low. The money in the pools is pumped in from various betting outlets all over the country. One way I understand why the tracks take a big cut is b/c of their operating expense to put on the races, while almost all of the money wagered on those races are by people either at home in front of their computer or at a betting outlet, not there in person.

Cadilac man,

Thanks for your response, unfortunetly, I know all this. What I am trying to get at is, is there an American site where these joker horses have got official weights. In Britain, every Horse is given an official weight in pounds, from 35 for a complete waster to 140, classic potential. All this is common knowledge for us Brits, it seems as usual, the land of the free is kept in the dark about everything.

Winbet:

If I understand you correctly, are you referring to the Free Highweight assigned to the European horses? If so, don't believe the US horse racing industry has such an equivalent weighting system. Another site:
