i think i have something to add to how the NL west shapes up oldman ted. it involves a name your very familiar with since you live in the bay area. sandy alderson. since 1998 hes been working in the commisioners office. on april 20th he was hired as chief operating officer and given monority ownership with the san diego padres.padres owner john moores said at the time he had modest hopes for mr. alderson.he wanted him to rebuild the franchise and make them consistent winners.this raised red flags in a city with a shiny new downtown ballpark and a renovated area. petco park is cavernous and the squad was not built for its dimensions. in its early planning and before unexpected delays due to legal haggling, padres gm kevin towers and then club pres larry lucchino confered with the stars of the team to find out what they wanted in a new park. tony gwynn and ken caminiti gave alot of input as did trevor hoffman and others.then the delays in court. then lucchino moved on and in the aftermath cammy moved on to houston and tony retired. the park was built to the specifcations of players no longer here. the organization knew there were problems. theres been constant complaints by players since. phil nevin, ryan klesko and a few others have been so vocal that nevin and gm towers nearly came to blows during a public arguement at the end of last season.the week before the alderson hiring john moores went public saying pads manager bruce bochys contract wont be extended untill results were positive on the field. he also said the team will look vastly different if trends continued. enter sandy alderson.many here believe he was brought here to blow up the team. bochy and towers will go as will the underachieving high dollar vets like nevin, klesko, giles and burroughs.and bring in speedy players who can generate runs in a big park. the players are pissed after each game and its very ugly here. in my opinion this team has too many internal issues to be a real player in the nl west.pressures are intense to fill the new park with butts but this city has never supported a losingt eam and they are desperate. plus theres speculation that moores is trying to sell the team which is why we were promised high profile free agents if the ballpark were built but weve gotten nothing since.to all padre bettors bet with caution this team is like mt st helens. its likely to explode any day.~RGoldmanTED said:Blue:
Now that the Giants have run off 5 in a row and currently stand at 13-11 after 24 games, that projects out to 87+ wins. Remember, in order for me to cash, the Giants will only need to be 7 games over .500 to reach 88 wins. That being said, as I stated in an earlier thread today, the unexpected loss of Bonds and now Benitez will make it more difficult but still possible.
I must say I am surprised at the Padres so far too date, but that can change. It's a long season. Arizona has really surprised me. The Dodgers, I expected would compete for the Division along with the Padres. Hang in there. Baseball is a funny sport. Things have a way of evening out over the course of 6 months. I'll root for you, if you root for me.
