Texas +1.02 over OAKLAND (10:05 PM)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The A’s lose a rookie .218 hitter to the DL and it creates a huge hole in the line-up. That’s how bad this team has been offensively all year. Nick Swisher hurt his right shoulder and he and his eight RBI’s and team leading three jacks will have to sit out. Third baseman Eric Chavez and outfielder Eric Byrnes have been mired in prolonged funks at the plate. Chavez is hitting .200 and Byrnes is batting .169. Both have just two home runs. The A’s rank near the bottom in the majors with a .238 team batting average, 94 runs scored, 16 home runs and 36 doubles. They are last in the league with two stolen bases. Kirk Saarloos is going to have to limit this offensive juggernaut to very little for his team to even have a remote chance of winning. Saarloos has issued 10 walks and he’s struck out six in 25 innings of work. He comes in with an ERA of 5.33 and has failed to make it past 5.1 innings in his last four starts. Chris Young is a big, hard throwing righty that has looked good in his past three games against the Yanks, Blue Jays and Mariners. We like this 23-year old. He’s an intimidating sight on the mound and he can bring it. Anyway, the A’s favored when two runs is an offensive outburst in completely ludicrous. Play: Texas +1.02 (Risking 1.5 units).

Boston +1.07 over DETROIT (7:05 PM)

Mike Maroth has been batting practice for the Red Sox since, well, forever. Maroth is 0-5 in his career against Boston with a 7.16 ERA. Against the Sox, he’s allowed 55 hits, 26 earned runs and seven bombs in just 32.2 innings. That’s a season for some. We’re not one to put much emphasis on past records and things of that nature but this one can’t be overlooked. This is virtually the same line-up that Maroth will face as he’s always faced and how confident can he be? This visitor has ruined him whenever he’s stepped on the mound and mentally against this team he’s beat before he throws a pitch. John Halama is major league baseball’s equivalent to the NBA’s sixth man. He’ll spot start and be effective; he’ll relieve and be effective and he’ll pretty much do what is asked of him. Halama has made nine relief appearances this year and has made 114 career starts. Certainly, he’s not unfamiliar with starting and certainly the Red Sox can get off the mat here. Play: Boston +1.07 (Risking 1.5 units).

Colorado +1.38 over SAN DIEGO (10:05 PM)

One has to wonder which Tim Redding is going to show up tonight, the one that gets knocked out in the first inning or the one that gets knocked out in the third. We know the Rockies have just one road win in 12 attempts, however, they will win another road game along the way somewhere and this could surely be it. Tim Redding is about the last pitcher in the majors that we’d recommend laying 3-2 on. In four starts he’s pitched a combined 16.2 innings and has walked seven and struck out eight. He’s also been tagged for 26 hits, 20 runs and six jacks over that same stretch of 16.2 innings. Jamey Wright has also started four games, two at home and two on the road. When he’s started away from Coors Wright has been very effective indeed. He three-hit the Giants in 7.1 innings and than, in Philadelphia, he limited the Phillies to one run and five hits over six innings. Offense has not been the problem for the Rockies. This intruder can score some runs, even away from Coors. This choice is all about wagering against a guy that has 21 career wins in nearly 76 starts. The opposition is hitting .351 against him and his ERA is 7.94. Tim Redding should not be favored by this much over the Colorado Buffalos. Overlay. Play: Colorado +1.38 (Risking 1.5 units).

Throw in the fact that SD has lost 13 games in a row with a 5th starter on the mound!
