NJ allows residents to wager on horses by phone

The Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - New Jersey residents can now dial in their horse racing bets with a phone-wagering system that opened for business Tuesday.

The automated phone system is an addition to New Jersey Account Wagering (NJAW), which started in October with the Internet-only service, www.4njbets.com.

Dennis Dowd, a senior vice president for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, said that more than 3,000 accounts opened for the Internet and phone betting are expected to generate a projected handle of more than $35 million this year.

"With the high profile Triple Crown races, starting with the Kentucky Derby on May 7; the opening of Monmouth Park on May 14; the stakes-laden Championship Harness Meet at the Meadowlands and the addition of the touch tone voice recognition system, we anticipate even more interest in account wagering," Dowd said.

New Jersey Account Wagering is available only for state residents who are at least 18-years-old. Betting is offered on races at the state's three racetracks, the Meadowlands, Monmouth Park and Freehold, and any incoming simulcasting signals offered by those facilities.

The new phone system will feature current-day scratches and changes.

Was this is "carve-out" for one company only? OR can NJ residents also now play horses on the internet?

Hello NJ Residents Can Only Use This Service Unless They Go Offshore
I Use To have Accts With Many Good Services But The State Made All Residents Close Them. Pretty Hypocritical When I Live 5 Minutes From The Casinos

I once read that New Jersey was/is the most corrupt state in the US.

I don't know---they call it the "garden State". Maybe someone who said that is pushing up daises.
