Washington +1.33 over SAN FRANCISCO (4:05 PM) <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
For Giants backers last night it was pretty painful to watch a quartet of Washington pitchers mow down Giants. It was like the Giants were standing at the plate and swinging the bat but they may have just as well not been. The Nationals won 9-3 and have won three of four on their current trip. John Patterson is as nasty as they come. His stuff is, that’s for sure. He’s allowed just 24 hits in 33.1 innings and he also has struck out 27. Patterson will face Jason Schmidt, who, in years past, didn’t need much of an introduction. However, Schmidt hasn’t won in nearly a month. He’s 0-1 with a 4.62 ERA in four starts since beating Colorado on April 10. More alarming is the fact that he has issued a total of nine walks over his last two outings. He surrendered six runs and eight hits in 6 2-3 innings of San Francisco's 9-8, 10-inning win at Arizona on Monday. Jason Schmidt is not pitching well and the Giants are not playing well. John Patterson is pitching extremely well and the Nationals come to play every night. Lastly, the Nationals are a nice price and when you put that all together it works very nicely for us. Play: Washington +1.33 (Risking 1.5 units).

San Diego +1.50 over ST. LOUIS (2:15 PM)

When you think of the Cardinals right away you think about offense. Well, let’s look at that for a moment. As a team, the hard-hitting Red-Birds are batting .259. They’ve scored less total runs than the Padres and their park allows about twice as many. They also have less hit than the Padres, less jacks, less RBI’s, less saves and pretty much less everything. Again, the Cardinals play in a hugely more hitter friendly park so those numbers for the Cardinals are even less impressive. Chris Carpenter is hit and miss and while he’s certainly capable of throwing a gem, Carpenter is still very hittable and seldom will he make it past the sixth inning. Adam Eaton is off to a good start and comes in with a 3-1 record and a 3.48 ERA, less than Carpenter’s 3.86 (Carpenter’s home ERA is 4.95). Lastly, when the Padres have the lead after seven innings, it’s pretty much lights out. The Cardinals are way overpriced here because they’re the Cardinals and if anyone tells you that Jason Isringhausen is a quality closer, have them get their head examined. Play: San Diego +1.50 (Risking 1.5 units).

TORONTO +1.17 over Chicago (1:05 PM)

We know that John Garland is the majors hottest pitcher but that’s like saying the Brewers are the league’s hottest team. Garland is a career .500 pitcher (that includes this years 5-0 mark) and that’s all he’ll ever be. Forget his numbers, they’re impressive, yes, but when it’s all said and done his numbers will be exactly like they’ve been his whole career. Ted Lilly is a guy that has lacked focus on too many occasions and that’s been the knock on him his entire career. However, when he is focused he’s a very tough lefty and we’ll look for him to bring it today against an undefeated John Garland. White Sox have won six in a row, they have the major’s best record and they are sending the leagues hottest pitcher to the mound. Why then, are they just a –1.27 favorite? We wonder and so should you. Play: Toronto +1.17 (Risking 1.5 units).
