Washington +1.05 over SAN FRANCISCO (4:05 PM)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The Nationals are really playing well and even more important than that is they give it everything they have every time they step between the white lines. They’re 4-1 on their current trip and yesterday marked the fifth straight game in which they’ve pounded out at least 10 hits. Estaban Loaiza has started six games and has been effective in all of them. He has yet to be knocked out before a full six innings and has been especially sharp in his last two, beating both the Phillies and Dodgers. Against that duo, Loaiza pitched a combined 14 frames and allowed just seven hits and three earned runs while striking out 18. The National League finally caught on to Kirk Rueter's strategy about three years ago. He lived on the outer half of the plate for most of his career. When umpires began following the rulebook strike zone at the request of baseball officials several years ago, Rueter wasn't getting the outside pitches. With a fastball that barely travels more than 86 MPH, Rueter can't afford to have location problems, and if he isn't getting the outside calls, he's very hittable. This year is no different. He’s still very hittable and still isn’t getting the outside calls. He’s walked 10 batters and struck out a lousy seven in 32 innings of work. He comes in with an ERA of 4.96 and the last thing you want to hear when you have money on the Giants is, “there’s movement in the Giants bullpen.” San Fran has dropped four in a row and we can’t give you a single good reason to wager on them here. Play: Washington +1.05 (Risking 1.5 units).

Oakland +1.00 over NY YANKEES (1:05 PM)
Just be happy that you’re not a wall in the Yanks bullpen today because chances are very good that you’d get punched. Kevin Brown is finished. His days as a major league pitcher are hanging by a thread. He’s not been able to retire anyone and in fact has been tagged for 41 hits and 22 runs in just 24 innings of work. His ERA up to this point is 8.25. Brown is feeling the heat and he looks like a deer caught in the headlights when he’s out there. We don’t think Steinbrenner is in a festive mood either after his horse performed like his Yankees. If Brown gets knocked out early again you may just see him get his release. Rich Harden is an up and coming star. No, check that, he’s already there. This kid can flat out bring it and with any run support whatsoever, he could easily be a 20-game winner. Harden has allowed one earned run or less in four of his five starts. He comes in with a 1.82 ERA and the opposition is hitting just .212 against him. In 34 innings he’s whiffed 32. His fastball is consistently clocked at 97 MPH and he mixes it with a very good change and slider. Lastly, the Yanks are 6-14 against right-handers and will face one of the leagues best today. Play Oakland +1.00 (Risking 1.5 units).
