I tend to agree and I do not use agents myself for other reasons, but would you consider using an agent to be betting offshore or locally?

If you're using an agent then you're betting offshore. Unless he's an agent for a local and I would think that's a rarity.

I don't mind it either way. As long as I can get down and have faith in the middleman, then all is good IMO. The reputation of the middleman is more important than the book. If you have a middleman and the book goes under, you should get paid anyhow.

An agent essentially guarantees a player a line of credit at a book by putting him on a sheet (or sheets - meaning different outs) and letting the book know weekly credit limits and in some case bet size limits. Most agents allow their sheet players to play anything a book has to offer (tennis, golf etc.) but not always, horses especially need agent approval. The big advantage with a solid "good pay" agent is money trail, there really is none. You meet once a week or at a certain settle figure and either pay or collect cash, no Western Union, or Neteller records to worry about. The down side is if the agent is busted a player's name may turn up in his records if confiscated by police. A lot of books will gurantee an agent and vice versa, while others are free lance and take full responsibility for paying players. Good agents can be difficult to find and max. due dilligence should be used when deciding to use one. Caveat Emptor as usual.

Using an agent you are playing on credit which can be a benefit or a drawback. You might get in over your head on credit.

With an agent you won't get any of the bonuses that an offshore sportsbook offers. If you go straight to the sportsbook the bonuses can be pretty generous.

Some of the best and most respected books available are very agent heavy with post ups as a secondary option for people not in an agent area. The no paper trail advantage weekly outweighs all advantages that posting up may present in the way of a sign up bonus. Plenty of very solid agents out there who have been around for 5+ years with off shore outs.

That is very true. Nothing beats cash in hand.

Then again you have to know an agent already. Books will not refer you to one. Either you have one or know one or you don't.

What advantage does a punter get by useing an agent ? The only advantage I see is possible tax evasion by a winner. Why don't regular bettors form partnerships and become agents for each other ? Many posters here communicate with each other off-the -board .

I don't think I need an agent ! Doesn't a middle-man take a cut ?

Give me a good reason to use an agent, and I'll think about it !

Like it or not, AGENTS are an essential component to offshore sports betting, and in particular, CREDIT SHOPS...

They act as the liason between the gambler and bookmaker...

They are GOOD for the sports book because they bring in customers...

They are GOOD for the gambler, because they allow you to bet on CREDIT...

In essence, they act as an INSURANCE program that many are searching for because quite often, they VOUCH to the gambler that he or she will get paid by them, even if the sports book fails...

Also they vouch to pay the the sports book if the gambler goes belly up...

In exchange for all of this, they get paid quite well. Often, they either receive a % of a player's total weekly volume whether the player wins or loses, but more often, they receive a NET % of the player's losses...

Just like one evaluates which sports book to join, DUE DILIGENCE must be paid before using an agent. Some of them are frauds who throw out names to dupe either the gambler or the sports book.

I'd be very careful before using one, and would make sure to get several references from both sides, meaning the sports book and from other gamblers...

It should also be noted that to play on Credit involves a lot of hard work because this part of the industry is GRAY at best, and very few are willing to talk openly to you about it....

Actually, it's more BLACK than gray because the exchange of monies between agents, gamblers and sports books occurs in the United States at times..

I've had one for five years and no problems. I prefer it rather then posting up for a few reasons.

I'm not limited to what I could bet in a single night compared to having to keep sending money offshore. (Helps during baseball season when you're laying odds on favorites.)

I know i'm getting paid no matter what. He's responsible whatever happens to the book. No excuses.

And last, why would you want to show that kind of money going in and out?
