<!-- begin text11 div --><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top><!-- begin leftcol --><!-- template inline -->SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Former major league pitcher Vida Blue could be headed to jail after failing to complete his probation from his latest drunken-driving conviction, San Mateo County authorities said Thursday.

Blue, who played most of his 17 major league seasons with the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants, was set to appear in court Monday for failing to perform his required community service after pleading no contest in April 2004 to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge, court officials said.

Blue played with Oakland, San Francisco and Kansas City before retiring in 1986. The six-time All-Star won the AL Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards in 1971, and went 209-161 with 37 shutouts during his career.

He has been a community representative for the Giants for 15 years, serving as a spokesman for various charitable ventures by the franchise. He also is the commissioner of the Giants' youth baseball program.

Two months ago, Blue was arrested in Scottsdale, Ariz. -- the location of the Giants' spring training complex -- on suspicion of DUI after a minor accident.

The incident in Arizona was Blue's third arrest on suspicion of DUI in less than six years. Blue also pleaded no contest after police arrested him for drunken driving in suburban Dublin, Calif., on Aug. 2, 1999.

A telephone call to Blue's attorney, Joshua Bentley, of San Carlos, was not immediately returned Thursday.

A dominating pitcher in his day, brings back a fond memory for me. Opening day 1971, President Nixon threw out the first ball, i got a half day of school, and the Senators beat the As 8 to zip. One of two Vida Blue losses on the way to starting that years all-star game. My hero of the time Frank "Hondo" Howard hit a home run too. I hope Vida is alright and not headed to jail in this era of 2 beers and you go to jail mentality. Good luck Vida!

2 beers and you go to jail mentality?

he's been caught driving drunk 3 times in 6 years...which probably means he was driving drunk about 30 times in the last 6 years.

would you hope he stays out of jail if he was just some blue-collar black guy with an alcohol problem who is endangering the lives of everyone around him...or is it just because you saw him pitch 35 years ago?

He was on a pedastool with me before he sold out with the lakers. Sorry, I know i pretty much went two or three directions on this thread.
