I sold my Groton, Ct condo at record high price, just as Pentagon wants to close sub-base.I don't think it will close, Navy still needs a place to park it's subs. I'm not military man, but you need a garage for your car (submarine). It's politics to me. Place was built for them.

If they do close the base, I sold at absolute apex.

Frog thoughts welcome, I don't know Navy well ! I think I got the best of it here.

Friday the 13th may have worked well for me.

All I can say is property was too highly valued not to sell.

I'm a former naval officer and I was very surprised to see New London on the base closure list. However, if you think about it, the main mission of the submarine force is to counter the Soviet nuclear sub threat and we know that the threat barely exists right now. So I understand how consolidation saves money, but I worry about moving all of the Atlantic Fleet submarines into The Shrink's backyard in Norfolk. One of two well placed mines--or even a well placed wreck--could bottle up the entire submarine fleet.

All of the submarine schools are in New London as well. It will cost a lot of money to replace them.

I hate the role that politics plays in this process, but it is unavoidable. In the early 90's, the Navy closed a large base in Charleston, SC and moved all of the ships and shore facilities to Pascagoula, MS and Ingleside, TX (which made no sense to anyone except the members of Congress in those two states who no doubt arranged that deal). I see now that Pascagoula and Ingleside are both now slated to close in this round. We spent all that money to create two brand new Navy bases that barely survived 15 years.

Good work, Doug. It sounds as if you could not have timed that better!
