Zambrano headed for MRI
Cubs right-hander Carlos Zambrano is headed back to Chicago for an examination, for what generally is known as lost another game, under adverse playing conditions. Ryan Dempster, by the way, wants to stay in the bullpen. … The Big Hurt is ready to rehab, at a time when the White Sox could probably use a reinforcement. Chicago has played great, but lost back-to-back games to split its four-game set with the Orioles. … Gary Washburn tells us that Sammy Sosa's foot seems to be getting better. … The Rangers lose a series-finale and an All-Star infielder against Minnesota on Sunday. … The Mets are back at .500, after dropping their third game among their last four. Rick Hummel credits Matt Morris, and John Mabry helped out, while playing his fourth position in four days. … The Tigers lost both Ivan Rodriguez and Dmitri Young to injury as they fell to the Angels, Gene Guidi tells us. … A.J. Burnett and the Marlins' bullpen collapsed, at the end of what was a lost weekend in San Diego. The Padres have won four straight. … It keeps getting worse and worse for the Devil Rays. They became the first team to lose a series in Kansas City – besides the Royals, of course – and while that's going on, opening-day starter Dewon Brazelton has failed to report to the minor leagues. … Morgan Ensberg breaks out with three bombs in one game against the Giants, as the Astros deal with the reality that Jeff Bagwell may or may not ever play again. Richard Justice writes about what Bagwell really wants. … Four hundred homers means nothing to Manny Ramirez, or maybe it means everything; who knows? But the Red Sox finished their series in Seattle on a downer, despite a successful lineup switch. … The Rangers signed pitcher Steve Karsay, who was cut by the Yankees last week. … Tim Hudson ground out a victory against the Dodgers, helped along by a couple of homers from the Jones's. Los Angeles has concerns about the arm of Odalis Perez. … Another successful outing for the Pirates' Dave Williams, although it wasn't pretty. … Jason Giambi reached second base after hitting his run-scoring double on Sunday – his first RBI in 22 days – and he appeared to be muttering angrily under his breath. Maybe that's what he needs. Or maybe the Yankees need to keep playing Oakland, which ranks last in the AL in runs scored and ninth in starters' ERA – and now must move ahead without its best pitcher, Rich Harden. Tino Martinez has eight homers during the eight-game winning streak, and Robinson Cano is raking. … Vernon Wells saw a reminder from the past, and responded with a big hit to beat the Indians, as Larry Millson writes. … Shawn Estes seems to be one of the few pitchers who can win in Coors Field. He went back to haunt his old teammates, with some aid from a streaking reliever.
