How/why did the Cubs trade Bruce Sutter after he wins the Cy Young? The franchise could have been something with a guy of his quality, and consider they traded him to the Cardinals?!

Like i said, just before my time, fill me in with the details if you can...

Not sure what they thought, bu they got two pretty good players in return Leon Durham and Ken Reitz, Reitz career dried up shortly after coming ti Chicago...He never batted over 300 times after the trade and was out of baseball a couple years later...Leon Durham had some very good years for the Cubs. ...

Ironically both players in the trade were done at around age 30...I think Durham got into drugs.

Sutter was only 28 and had five more good seasons

Go Figure

December 9, 1980: The Cubs trade reliever Bruce Sutter, the 1979 National League Cy Young Award winner, to the Cardinals for 3B Ken Reitz, OF-1B Leon Durham, and a player to be named.

Anyone's guess why the Cubs did it.

Thats hindsight though..that guy put up fabulous #'s, his 1984 season was better than 79's cy young if not for Rick Sutcliffe.

Durham and Reitz for him though, thats a rip off, makes little sense to me, didn't the Cubs already have Buckner?

Exactly, I was looking into his numbers for some reason and could not figure how the hell the Cubs got rid of a should be hall of famer. Career too short I guess for the hall, but didn't he basically patent the splitter?

Yep the Cubs had Buckner as their regular first baseman. That season 1981 - Durham hit .290 with 10 homers and 35 RBI playing mostly outfield and Ken Reitz hit a whopping .215 with 2 homers and 28 RBI playing 3rd base for the Cubbies. Two years later St. Louis rallies for three runs in the 6th and Bruce Sutter saves the 7th game 6–3 win to give the Cards the World Championship. Not to mention Sutter made the 81 NL All Star team with the Cards.

Brock: At the end of the 1980 season the Cub's traded him to Saint in exchange for third sacker Ken Reitz and first baseman Leon Durham.

Bottomline, the Cubs got pissed at Sutter when after three years in the league he filed for arbitration. He asked for 700K which was twice what the Cubs were offering and the arbitrator sided with Sutter. That jacked-off the dudes running Chicago.........................and well, you know the rest of the story.

Thats what i was Looking for!

Seems the Cubs cheapness has been around for a long time, what a disgrace, although in those days, pre 1984, i don't recall them being the huge gate draw they are now.

Chicago seems like a cheap franchise considering the fan base and I would think a higher end MLB revenue?

I read where Wrigley sold the team to the Tribune Co for 21 Milion in 1981

The Cubs were a cheap franchise, but can't really say that anymore. Payroll is either #1 or 2 in the NL and in the Top 5 in the majors. Lack of funds is not the problem anymore.

Geroge bought the yankees for like 7 million back in the late 60's i believe. I think he has made a pretty good return on that investment

I have followed the Cubs since 1969 and the moves they have made are head-scratching to say the least. They traded Bill Madlock to the Giants for a washed-up Bobby Murcer. Cubs can't have any high paid black players you know (William Wrigley was a racist).

Cubs never really drew until 1984 when they won their division.

What about Ernie Banks or Billy Williams or Fergie Jenkins? All black players who played YEARS with the Cubs..

Brock - Ernie was Mr Cub. He and Williams were not players who made trouble (contract or otherwise). When Jenkins wanted more money, he was traded for Madlock. When Madlock wanted more money after 2 batting titles, he was gone.

When Banks and Williams were in Chicago, there were many other players that were fan favorites (Santo, Beckert, Kessinger, Hundley, Holtzman). By 1976, all of them were gone and the Cubs lone star was Madlock. When he started chirping about more money, he was gone. It has been said more than once that Wrigley didn't want a black star to be the identity of his team.
