Nick Zito apparently still prescribes to the theory that strength comes in numbers.

Despite coming up empty with five entries in the Kentucky Derby, Zito will have three horses in the Preakness after adding High Fly to the list Tuesday.

After breezing through a half-mile workout in Kentucky, High Fly was designated to join stablemates Noble Causeway and Sun King in Saturday's $1 million race.

"That's all he needed after running a mile-and-a-quarter two weeks ago," said Zito's assistant, Tim Poole.

High Fly, who will be ridden by Jerry Bailey, finished 10th in the Derby. Noble Causeway was 14th and Sun King finished 15th. Zito's other Derby horses — Bellamy Road and Andromeda's Hero — won't run Saturday.

The only time Zito won a Preakness was in 1996, when Louis Quatorze outdistanced the field after finishing 16th in the Derby. Zito hopes history repeats itself Saturday.

"It can happen," he said. "The Derby is the Derby. I saluted the winner. Now, it's another race."

The addition of High Fly means the Preakness almost certainly will be run with the maximum 14 entrants for the first time since 1992. The field will be determined Wednesday, when trainer D. Wayne Lukas decides whether to enter Going Wild in the Preakness or the Hirsch Jacobs Stakes.

If Going Wild runs in the Preakness, then Golden Man will be excluded from the Preakness field because his lifetime earnings of $59,100 is lowest among the projected starters.

GIACOMO'S COMING:mad: Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo is expected to arrive at Pimlico Race Course on Wednesday — and so is the media.

Less than a dozen reporters gathered around the stakes barn Tuesday, mainly because only two horses were in their stalls: Afleet Alex and Scrappy T.

"It will be a little more hectic when you've got this barn filled with horses," said Tim Ritchey, who trains Afleet Alex.

Giacomo, who won the Derby as a 50-1 underdog, breezed through a half-mile in 51.80 seconds Tuesday. His trainer, John Shirreffs, scoffed at those who predict his horse can't win again.

"I understand what the press is saying and some people are saying, I guess," he said. "But, that being said, they were all in the gate, and Giacomo won the race."

SIGHTSEEING TOUR:mad: In an effort to get his horse acquainted with the cluttered infield at Pimlico, Scrappy T trainer Robbie Bailes brought the gelding to the track Monday.

"I just wanted to let him see the tents and all that stuff," Bailes said Tuesday. "Hopefully by Saturday he won't be startled by it and he'll be focused on what he has to do."

Scrappy T, who has never finished below third place in nine career races, likes to enjoy the scenery during his first few days at a different track.

"He's the type of horse that likes to look around a lot," Bailes said. "If he was a horse that was more laid back, and I didn't think the tents and everything would concern him, I probably wouldn't have brought him here this early."

Not much hype at all about Giacomo. Maybe the horse to sneak a TC trophy.
