we have a pond outside our sports bar with lots of ducks. we have one duck that has been sitting on eggs for 2 months now. at what point do i do the humane thing and throw the eggs away so this duck can move on with her life? they are not going to hatch, right?

If you're 100% sure they won't hatch, then I'd do it ASAP. Boy you're right about off topic!

I would go to the nearest farm and get 5-6 hatchable chicken eggs and replace them with those. Imagine how funny that will be when the duck is running around with 6 little chickens!

I was biking today on a trail by a river and there were DUcks with ducklings on the trail. Those little things are so damn cute.

Oh that poor duck. Leave her with her eggs since you will probably just cause her more distress if you take them away. Dont want her to cause any grievous harm to herself.

the whole story is that their were 8 eggs. 5 of them hatched and mom and the 5 kids left the nest and off into the water they went. 2 days later mom comes back without the 5 ducklings (lost them all, they are very vulnerable in the first 48 hours) and begins sitting on the 3 eggs that did not hatch originally. she has been doing this non stop except fot a quick water break at which point i peek at the eggs and see they are very discolored and smell.:icon_conf

shes happy sitting on them, let her.

I agree:smoker2: might be the same feeling for the duck to sit on those eggs then it is when you win a bet

As a former Physician, I can deduce if the eggs are discolored and foul smelling, it means contamination, infection and certainly they won't produce viable offspring...

I would recommend to do the Momma Duck and yourself a huge favor by getting rid of them...

Then, the two of you can move along in life happily ever after...

Earl, see if what I say here makes sense

Everyday man makes assumptions/things based on what WE think its best for nature..............a system that has carefully evolved (or created......just in case it suits better) for a longgggggggggggg time, we as simply humans can't know all the implications of altering something..........until its typically too late

Trust me that the duck does what's suposed to do.....and will act according to instinct (which is what is suposed to happen)

As sad as it would (apparently) look humans typically make things worse for any animal while trying to "help"
