May 20, 2005. . .Although millions of horseplayers still can’t believe that Giacomo won the Kentucky Derby at 50-1 odds, (or that Closing Argument finished second at 70-1), quite a few will be equally surprised if Giacomo repeats his stunning triumph in the Preakness at Pimlico on Saturday.
In the 1-1/4 mile Derby, Giacomo benefited greatly from a red hot, suicidal pace that cooked nearly every horse in the top 10 through six blistering furlongs clocked in 1:09.59. In the 1-3/16 miles Preakness, however, there is likely to be a more realistic pace scenario that should boost the chances of several horses Giacomo defeated.
