I think it was that they had lost to Miami so many times with missed kicks that them doing something about it was supposed to turn those losses to wins, which would mean national titles.

Yes that's exactly what it was. After so many years of wide lefts they got the top ranked kicker coming out of high school.

Did it help them? I think they won the title that year despite being beaten by Notre Dame...

I don't think it did. Reminds me of when the Bills got Christie to replace Norwood or Janakowski to replace I think Cole Ford after both players cost their team titles or conference championships.

Bentley did have a great line when Lou Holtz recruited him. When Holtz asked Bentley if he sent him out there one on eleven, could he count on Bentley to kick it out of the endzone for a touchback. Bentley's response was "yes, but if not, he'd make the tackle". As overrated as he ended up, I always loved that answer.

He also made a last-second game-winning field goal for Florida St. in the Orange Bowl vs. Nebraska, which won Florida St. the mythical National Championship.

Bently was suppose to right all the "wide rights"...and he did, after him it was Sebastian, they've had some decent kickers since.
