Cool, bro'

hey, are you pretty familiar with the Detroit area?

If so, what is the bar scene like? Are there blues, jazz, etc?

I remember when I went there I asked the same questions. A guy told me if he had to go into Detroit to go out, he would just keep driving through the tunnel or over the bridge and into Windsor.

Detroit actually has some cool places going up. There are some places I wouldn't want to venture to at night, but that goes with any big city. I have never seen any reason to drive to Toledo of all places...Windsor I understand, especially if you like 19-21 year old girls.

Noreaga - Toledo? Do you live down around Monroe to hang out in Toledo when going out?

As far as Detroit goes you could stay at an upscale Hotel called the Atheneum where many teams stay when playing in town. This will put you right by Greektown with good eats and nightlife and very nice casino. The MGM Casino isn't far either. The Fox theatre and Hockeytown Cafe are just down Woodward across from Comerica Park.

The Windsor alternative is also there with many nude strip clubs and a good Casino Windsor and some nightclubs plus that safe feel of not being in Detroit where if you drift off the path can be like many urban cities and get yourself in a situation not using common sense.

If you are just coming into the area to go to the Pistons game and not venture out then you are better staying north of Detroit in Birmingham as the Lakers did last year for the finals. This puts you about 15 miles up I-75 from the Palace. Very nice area and nightlife but again pricey.

Could you recommend a hotel near shops, restrats. and nightlife in that area, preferably within walking distance?

Thanks again,

BB

The Townsend is the best Hotel in Birmingham and might be where the Heat will be staying since Shaq liked it last year here. It's expensive however but if you are coming in for a playoff game with the wife you may want to go first class if you can get in.

It's not a mall and bar area but there are upscale shops for the wife and a couple lower key sports bars within a 4 mile radius. Spectadium is in Troy and is more of the traditional sportsbar and pretty casual.

As far as why I hang out in Toledo.. I live outside of Toledo, guys. in OHIO. there are plenty of cool spots in Toledo.

I thought with that Detroit Basketball as your location you were in Michigan and not 100 miles from the Palace. Some great old rock shows at the Toledo Sports Arena and a good rock station at 104.7. The Zoo is first rate and so is the speedway. Pretty depressed economy around Toledo from what I've seen however when driving to Cleveland or Cincinnati for a ballgame from Detroit.

I grew up closer to detroit than to cleveland and before this cable and satellite explosion, Detroit was the only city that was covered here.. Im slowly becoming more and more a cleveland fan, but my heart is still with the Detroit teams.

Been to Detroit once, i swear the area downtown not far from Comerica park looked like bombed out Hanoi or something LOL

What a hell hole in sections, worse than i have seen in the WORST Chicago ghetto's.

I think I heard Detroit DOES NOT plpow snow off the streets in the winter too, is that accurate??

Many side streets in the Detroit area are the last to get plowed from what I hear in as you say "the ghettos". Downtown area is taken care of. The only time you go downtown is for events, court or certain jobs since less than 900,000 live in the city limits and are low income while 6 million live in the more affluent suburbs which is the case in many old big cities. I've seen areas of Chicago and Cleveland that remind me alot of drives through Detroit but since I don't have to deal with it daily it's not an issue for me fortunately.

I remember in the late 70s before cable having a big roof top antenna to pick up Bengal and Browns games on CBS or NBC or whatever wasn't airing in Detroit from the Toledo stations. They show the Browns games now rather than Detroit don't they? Sunday ticket has simplified multiple game viewing indeed.
