TIP OF THE DAY
Sport: MLB - Baseball
Game: Pittsburgh Pirates @ Cincinnati Reds on May 26 2005 7:10PM
Prediction: Pittsburgh Pirates
Current Line: -107
Over/Under: 9 -115
Reason: The Pirates are off a series sweep at St. Louis, albeit the
wrong way but now face a team that they have defeated nine of the last
13 meetings. The three losses at St. Louis dropped Pittsburgh's road
record to .500 but the Pirates are still a solid road team and should
take Game 1 with a big pitching advantage.
Oliver Perez is making his second start since coming back from taking
some time off to work on his mechanics. His first start was a success as
looks like he might be turning the corner. His fastball topped out at
nearly 10 MPH faster than before his time off and he grabbed his first
win in almost a month. He loves facing the Reds as he has a career 3.05
ERA and Pittsburgh is now 5-1 in his last six starts against the Reds.
That includes a perfect 4-0 record at Cincinnati. His ERA at Great
American Ballpark is a rock solid 2.48. Elizardo Ramirez will be making
his third career start following a dud in his last outing against the
Indians. The Reds have dropped his first two starts of the season and
the Pirates are at their best going against righties, hitting .266 on
the road this season.
The Pirates bullpen remains solid with a 4.19 ERA on the season that
includes an ERA of 3.82 over their last 10 games. Pittsburgh has their
top starter back and he looks to back to the form that pegged him a
preseason darkhorse for the NL Cy Young by many including myself. While
that is out the door, a turnaround to the season is likely and it
continues with the Pirates win on Thursday. Play Pittsburgh
