More than 500 detainees are held at Guantanamo

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- E IIMA -->The US military says it has identified five incidents in which the Koran was mishandled by American personnel at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp.

But the jail commander said they had found no credible evidence that the book had been flushed down a toilet.

The denial follows similar allegations against US guards in a 2002 document made public on Wednesday, in which an FBI agent quoted an inmate.

Newsweek also made the claim, which the magazine was forced to retract.

The Newsweek report sparked protests across the Muslim world, and was blamed for riots in Afghanistan that killed at least 15 people.

The magazine withdrew its story, after saying it could no longer corroborate the report.

The White House rounded on the magazine, saying its report had done "lasting damage" to the US image in the Muslim world.

Deliberate and accidental

Brig Gen Jay Hood said he had found that the Koran had been mishandled on five occasions since late 2001.

Four cases involved guards and one was by an interrogator. The incidents appeared to be deliberate and accidental, he said.

Brig Gen Hood said those involved had not violated the rules they were working to at the time.

The inmate who made the original allegation about the Koran being flushed down the toilet had retracted it, he said.

A Pentagon spokesman characterised the incidents as mainly inadvertent handling of the Muslim holy book. More than 500 people are being held at Guantanamo Bay, the US naval base on Cuba, suspected of links to the al-Qaeda network. Some have been detained for more than three years, but have not been charged.<!-- E BO -->

The pentagon doesn't lie.

Although a US army spokesman did admit it has failings with what information gets passed on.

Blue, these are the same type of people that think 9/11 was our own fault. You know, we shouldn't bring these people to justice, we should look at their feelings and try to understand why they would do it. It has to be because we deserved it, somehow, doesn't it?

This is just a shocking development...These misuses of the koran must stop!
I'm just in a tizzy.

What a fxckin joke all the main stream media is circiling the wagons to justify defending "Ripleys believe it or Newsweek".

The dumb fxcks never mention those other "misuses" of the Koran like the slaughter of 3000 innocent people on 9/11 or the slaughter of their own fellow muslims.Hows that for a misuse.

I mean dosen't the media know how fxckin stupid they sound?...Like who gives a fxck.
Media is part of the problem and the reason why wack job libs will never ever regaain any significant power in this country again....praise Allah.

You guys are comparing the US military to Islamic Militants. Try to get some perspective.

But if you are going to make comparisons, let's try possibly 100,000 dead from US military bombs for no apparent reason to the beheading of innocents for no apparent reason.

Both are positively dispicable.

x, i dont think its right to flush a koran down the toilet but...the fact that it is on the news every day and causing riots when those people are cutting off heads (some of the victims are women) is so ridiculous, my words cant fully describe it.

You forgot to put in Saddam's victims too when he was in power which number way more than 100,000.

If we're going to go way back, falseteller, then let's not forget the US gov'ts complicity in Saddam's actions.

Blue: I don't consider desecrating ANY religious book to be that big of a deal. But as someone who works in public relations, I can safely say that if I want to build friendly ties with the average Muslim, I'm not going to piss on their holy book. This is just common sense. But comparing the actions of the US gov't to barbarians cutting off heads (and your calling them 'those people' as though the average joe in the street protesting is the same as the guy cutting off heads) is very self-righteous and completely ignores the negative consequences.

Except that I've never killed any babies.

You stretch/spin/distort the truth all the time. Falseteller is a good spin on your name. Frankly, I thought you'd be impressed.

Is this mishandling or torture?

-If they took a phone book and glued a koran cover on the front, showed it to a muslim and then stuck it in the toilet

-How about if they just told a muslim they was a warehouse next door, full of Americans who were throwing copies of the Koran into a shredder

-What about if they took a picture of a koran, and threw the picture in the toilet

-How about if some non-muslim handed a koran to a muslim with his dirty infidel non-believer's hands?

I wish John McCain or anyone who has ever been a prisoner would comment on how touching a man-made book - a copy, not an original document mind you - can be trumpeted as abuse, torture or anything other than a complete joke.

I'm sorta thinking along the lines of what kind of people we're dealing with when a book is mishandled or reportedly mishandled, and riots start up and people die as a result....

A rather extreme twist of the time when John Lennon made the comment that the Beatles were "bigger than Jesus" and all the people got thier panties in a bind and started burning Beatles music and denouncing them......then John had to come back and tell the masses that it was more or less a figure of speech and that he didn't mean it literally....just that they were so incredibly popular at the time.....then things at the trailer park calmed down a little....

Maybe the rioters and the record burners could go to Walmart or Kmart or somewhere and buy a life, and use the leftover change to go buy a hooker and get laid......
