Looks like another long 2013:

I’m eating none of that, but I think I can say this about the Cubs with something like certitude: 2013 is going to be another grim one.

When ancient, why-hasn’t-he-been-traded-yet? outfielder Alfonso Soriano looks like your most dependable hitter, and you have no idea how focused or day-dreamy shortstop Starlin Castro will be, you have issues.

The Cubs aren’t actually rebuilding, they’re regurgitating. That is, we saw this before, on the way down.

Everybody picks the Cubs (61-101 last year) to finish last in the National League Central. Some have them losing 100 or more games again.

Unfair! The Cubs are people, too. They have feelings. They will not lose more than 99 games.

I almost guarantee it.

Off to a great start in 2014:

The Cubs have dropped four consecutive home openers for the first time since 1991-94.

The last time the Chicago Cubs won the World Series, Teddy Roosevelt was in the Oval Office, World War I had not yet happened and Theo Epstein’s grandfather, who wrote the screenplay for Casablanca, was still 10 months away from being born.
It was 1908. One-hundred and seven long years ago.
Of course, as ESPN’s Keith Law pointed out, no matter who wins the World Series in 2015, a significant drought will be broken:

None of the other three quite stack up to that of the Cubs, who have gone over 39 thousand days without a World Series title. They haven’t even been to the Fall Classic in 70 years.
Led by future Hall-of-Famers Frank Chance and Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown, the Cubbies went 99-55 and defeated the Detroit Tigers four games to one in the 1908 World Series. It was their second title in a row, but it would be their last for over a Century.
The Cubs returned to the Fall Classic seven times over the next 37 years but were never able to come out on top. Their most recent appearance in 1945, which they lost 4-3 to the Tigers, spawned the “Curse of the Billy Goat.”
In 2003, of course, the Cubs were on the brink of returning to the World Series until the now-infamous play involving Steve Bartman changed those plans:
