Pinnacle and 5 Dimes both put up some wild lines but this one at Pinnacle has me wondering if a line can be placed on anything. From the National Spelling Bee:

<TABLE id=tblPropFut onmouseover="changeto(event, '#F6C88F')" onmouseout="changeback(event, '#EEEEEE')" cellSpacing=3 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#ffffff border=0><TBODY><TR id=ignore><TD class=contestRow vAlign=top width="15%" bgColor=#8fbdf6>Wed 6/1</TD><TD class=contestRow bgColor=#8fbdf6 colSpan=2>Will winning word contain an 'e' ?
</TD></TR><TR class=normalRow bgColor=#eeeeee><TD class=main_body_blk width="15%">05:00 AM</TD><TD class=main_body_blk width=auto>13 Yes</TD><TD class=main_body_blk width="25%"> -184</TD></TR><TR class=hiliteRow bgColor=#eeeeee><TD width="15%"> </TD><TD class=main_body_blk width=auto>14 No</TD><TD class=main_body_blk width="25%"> +174</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Any spelling experts out there?

Notice that 11 of the last 15 contained the letter 'e'. Given that, we have 73% of the last fifteen were with 'e'. (not a large sample, I know.)

The line you have of -1.84 corresponds to a 65% chance of winning the prop "Winning word has e." I'm not sure what the entire history is, but given the last fifteen years, you have value by taking the prop that the final word has the letter 'e.' in it. tulsa

Actually

Actually, I miscounted: 12 of the last fifteen had the letter, 'e.'

So, 80% of the last fifteen winning words had 'e' making that -1.84 line even mo' better. tulsa

from Tulsas data, 5 boys in a row have won, but 4 girls in a row before that. over the whole thing its 8 boys and 7 girls.

just hit " girl to win" at +171 based on this.

I hit on a website that lists winners back to 1925. 44 girls have won, 35 boys. makes sense since girls are better students.

girl to win is still +162 :monsters-

hit it!

also take under 9.5 letters, should be favored too, is a dog.

I dumped my "e" bet and took the other side +199. it should be at about -175 on the yes.

You have to remember this is a spelling bee. That means that the last word in the competion is going to be a longgggggggggggggggggg word. They are not going to ask the contestant to spell the word cat in the championship round. I believe the winning word will contain at least 15 letters. So the odds of the letter e not being in a 15 letter word is almost nill. The smart money will be on Yes.

going back to 1925, under 9.5 letters is 45 wins and 35 losses.

under 9.5 should be -125

its still +118.

+118= good bet

Great thread.

I haven't looked at the contestants, but from the lines posted
I suspect the boys may have a "ringer" this year. Anyone know?

Anybody else go 0-3

Thirteen-year-old Anurag Kashyap of California was the last of the more than 273 competitors still standing Thursday.

The eighth-grader burst into tears and said he felt “pure happiness” after spelling the musical term “appoggiatura” correctly to win the annual spelling bee.
