I am watching Shaq now, who is basically unstoppable.
And I remember Jordan was also unstoppable.

Was Kareem Abdul Jabbar's hook shot absolutely unstoppable? I remember it was when he was in his prime...

Famous skyhook by Kareem

Game 6 1974 NBA finals Milwaukee Bucks at Boston Celtics (old Boston Garden).

Game 6 of the series was one of the greatest postseason games ever played. Abdul-Jabbar's sky hook from the corner in the second overtime gave the Bucks a 102-101 victory to tie the series at 3-3. The Bucks lost Game 7 in Milwaukee, 102-97. That is John Havlichek in front of Kareem, with Oscar Robertson, Paul Silas and Jo Jo White under the basket. I was at the game, incredible clutch shot by Kareem.

NBA defenses were less sophisticated back them is the perception I have. Not as much double teaming which made many guys much more unstoppable. Hell of a player though, don't get me wrong.

Not going to buy the double team theory for two reason's. One Kareem was a very good passer and second; if you double him who on that Laker team are you leaving alone.

You should buy it, because not doubling him resulted in a very easy shot.

Nope I refuse to buy:lolBIG: Seriously Royal it would fun to go back and watch some games to see if he was doubled. My memory is fuzzy except for them whooping the Celtics 2 out of 3 championships in the eighties.

The skyhook from Kareem was unstoppable through the 70s. Nate Thurmond, who was considered the best defensive center early in Kareems career, said that the range he had with it and as far back as the shot started from a 7-4 head there was no way to get to the ball. Your best chance was a double team with a guard swiping at the ball before he could get it up but that rarely happened. I don't think that shot ever was blocked.

Pete Maravich in college was very close to Lew Alcindor as being unstoppable as well. I think he averaged 44 points per game over 3 years without a 3 point line available that he routinely hit from well beyond.

Thanks for the thread on Kareem, who was my favorite player by far when I was growing up, and still is to this day. It amazes me that no big man in recent history has come close to perfecting the hook shot the way Kareem did.

A friend of mine gave Kareem the nickname 'God', and used to say almost on a nightly basis, "You cannot stop God!" You gotta remember the NBA ( NoBankAccount) had a rule you couldnt double down unless a man had the ball, and Kareem could get his shot off before help came and was unstoppable along with many others of his day including (but not all) Bob McAdoo, Elvin Hayes. George Gervin,Pete Maravich, Rick Barry,Wilt Chamberlain and many more not mentioned.:drink:

With the height and release point it was the only unstoppable shot I have seen. You could block Mike, and a dunk can be blocked. Shaq will just bully you out of the way. But as far as a purist hoops fan, Lew/Kareem was the best center. My favorite moment, I think Finals in 81. Opponent, or his man was one of the meanest, Darryl Dawkins aka Chocolate Thunder. Kareem was eating him up, and Darryl was getting really frustrated. After numerous face jobs he cheap shots Kareem with a real well placed elbow to the mouth. A lot of blood was coming out, both sides. Split his lip for sure. It was back in the day when they did not blink when you bled. I think the trainer looked at him, nothing they could do. Talk about a fired up Kareem. He played with a fire and intensity I rarely saw from him. Bloody mouth and all. I was so mesmerized by this preformance I missed my only brother's H.S. graduation ceremony. Oops. It was one of the guttiest performances I have ever witnessed.

Best Wishes...OF:howdy:

Didn't they outlaw dunking for a few years because of how dominant Lew Alcindor was?

Can you imagine Shaq's "basketball skills" without being able to dunk?

Railbird with all due respect how can that be. He got 2 more rings and both of those were against the Celtics. And I can't recall Parrish dominating any of those series.
