The White Sox rewarded Ozzie Guillen's success this season by not only picking up his option for next season, but also adding two more seasons and an option year that could extend the deal into 2009.

Frank Thomas made his 2005 debut and brought a rare sellout crowd to its feet. But Timo Perez replaced Thomas in the seventh inning because of a mild strain of Thomas' right hip flexor and ended up being the hero with a two-out, two-run single to left that snapped the Sox' third three-game losing streak of the season.

The Angels and heralded draft pick Jered Weaver ended a year of acrimonious negotiations in stunning fashion Monday night when the Long Beach State All-American lowered his asking price at the 11th hour and agreed to terms on minor-league contract with a signing bonus for a club-record $4 million.

Preston Wilson doesn't figure to be a Rockie after the July 31 trading deadline. Which uniform he will wear remains a mystery. The Yankees expressed lukewarm interest in Wilson last summer, but have not had much contact since. The Angels, Padres, Orioles and Nationals are all legitimate possibilities.

If you want to know why the Yankees want Roger Clemens back, why this story isn't going away, all you have to do is look at the way the three guys who were supposed to come up aces -- Randy (Keep 'Em Close) Johnson, Carl Pavano, Mike Mussina -- pitched over the weekend against Boston.

The Yankees could accelerate their efforts to obtain a proven big league reliever such as Tampa Bay right-hander Danys Baez or Phillies lefty Billy Wagner.

The bullpen figures to be the area the Mets address at the trading deadline. The Braves figure to be among the teams shopping, too, so the Mets should have considerable competition for Baez, Detroit's Ugueth Urbina and Oakland's Octavio Dotel. What the Mets will enjoy is a surplus of starters, another trading-deadline commodity.

Are the Cubs searching to acquire another starter in a trade? "It depends on when we think [Mark] Prior might be ready,'' manager Dusty Baker said. There's no timeline for Prior's return from his right elbow fracture. But the Cubs want to see if their farm system can produce and give minor-leaguers the assurance that they will be called on if they perform.

The White Sox's logjam of outfielders at the major-league and high minor-league levels clogs any attempt to land speedy Tim Raines Jr., son of first-base coach Tim Raines, who was designated for assignment by Baltimore.

The Mariners will look for a veteran catcher. Again. Benito Santiago's name will surely surface, but he remains an unlikely solution, since the Mariners have passed on him twice in the past month, once in a trade and again as a free agent. Greg Myers, 39, who was released by the Blue Jays last month, remains available. Colorado has good depth at the position, which could make Todd Greene expendable. Another catcher, Boston's Shawn Wooten, is available by definition.
-- Seattle Post-Intelligencer

If the Devil Rays are interested, they might be able to get some veteran bullpen help, as Danny Graves (Cincinnati) and Matt Herges (San Francisco) were recently designated for assignment.
-- St. Petersburg Times

Joe Randa knows if the Reds tread water through June changes will likely come in July. He said veterans and players on one-year contracts -- he qualifies on both counts -- could be traded.
