Good for Shaq, George Mikan had to go into debt paying medical bills prior to his death. He sold off most of his trophies and memorabilia from a Hall of Fame career.

About Shaq: He also (according to a guy I know) has given a LOT financially to Newark NJ; where he grew up. A good guy--but so is Tim Duncan and the Spurs gets the trophy this year.

Man that's sad to hear. But with the good comes the bad. Everything has its prize in one way or another.

MIAMI (AP) -- The family of George Mikan accepted Shaquille O'Neal's offer to pay for the late center's funeral expenses.

O'Neal said arrangements were finalized Friday. ``Everything's going to be handled,'' O'Neal said.

Mikan, the NBA's first dominant big man, died Wednesday night at a rehabilitation center in Scottsdale, Ariz., following a long fight with diabetes and kidney ailments. He was 80.

Shortly after the Heat beat Detroit 88-76 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals on Thursday night, O'Neal said he would like to handle the funeral costs. ``I heard they were having some trouble, some problems, so if you contact the Heat office, I would like to pay for the funeral,'' O'Neal said. O'Neal and Mikan are linked by leading the Lakers franchise to multiple NBA championships; Mikan carried the Minneapolis Lakers to five titles in a six-year span. O'Neal led the Los Angeles Lakers to three consecutive championships from 2000-2002.

Hard to believe the Lakers kept Kobe and let Shaq go. Hope the Heat win it all for that reason alone !

Better to step up than not step up at all.

I am glad to see a soft side for the big man.

Too bad nobody stepped up to help him while still living. He and his family pleaded to the NBA to change the pension rules. I beleive he was getting screwed by getting very little money from NBA, while he was the first big man superstar. Everyone was aware of his medical problems and his financial state, yet nobody steps up until he passes away.

Shaq's the man.

I'm glad he split ways with that a-hole Kobe ... it's just NOT right rooting against someone like Shaq that loves the game & has fun playing it ..
