Sick Peavy to miss Sunday start vs. Cubs
Associated Press

SAN DIEGO -- Padres ace Jake Peavy, the 2004 major league ERA champion, will miss his scheduled start on Sunday against the Chicago Cubs because of an upper respiratory infection that`s been making its way through the clubhouse.

``He wasn`t far off from pneumonia,`` assistant trainer Jim Daniel said before Saturday night`s game. Although X-rays showed his lungs were clear, the 24-year-old right-hander said he was treated as if he had pneumonia.

``It kind of knocked me off my feet for a little bit,`` Peavy said. ``I can`t remember the last time I`ve been sick. Everybody gets the sniffles and gets colds, but I`m talking about just knocking you back. It`s weird sitting at home watching the boys on TV.``

Peavy, who had a 2.27 ERA last year, had been scheduled to start against Carlos Zambrano in the series finale. He`s now scheduled to start Wednesday night at home against Cleveland.

Left fielder Ryan Klesko had a high fever and was out of the lineup Saturday night. Right fielder Brian Giles and second baseman Geoff Blum were sick but were in the lineup.

Other sick Padres were utility players Robert Fick and Damian Jackson, and reliever Akinori Otsuka. They would be available Saturday night if needed, manager Bruce Bochy said.

``It`s just running rampant through the clubhouse,`` Bochy said. ``We just have to try to weather the storm. You hope it runs its course and gets over with quickly.``

Peavy (5-0, 2.37 ERA) was the sickest of the seven. He said he started feeling ill after his start Tuesday night, when he lasted just four innings in an 8-4 win over Milwaukee. He was unable to keep food down and lost nine pounds.

``As bad as I want to be out there tomorrow, I tell you what, if we win this game tonight, it`s going to make me feel a lot better about missing tomorrow`s start,`` Peavy said Saturday. ``I`m not going to be happy about ever being pushed back or missing a start, but I do understand the way I feel, I can`t say I have much gas in the tank.

``I don`t know how far down the road I can go tomorrow. Could I get through six, seven strong like you want to and you`re expected to do? I don`t know. I would imagine not eating and losing nine pounds has taken quite a bit out of me. But you never know what you`re dealing with.``

Peavy will be replaced Sunday by right-hander Woody Williams, who will be activated following a monthlong stay on the disabled list with a strained left oblique. Before Peavy got sick, Williams had been scheduled to make a rehab start for Class A Lake Elsinore.

Williams (2-2, 4.84) will be held to about 80 pitches, Bochy said.

This is big. I was leaning towards the Padres but this news makes it a definite Cubs bet. Thanks for the update.
