Murray fired as Indians hitting coach

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians, who entered play on Saturday with the second-worst batting average in the majors, have fired Hall of Famer Eddie Murray as their hitting coach.

The decision was made following Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox. It marked Cleveland's fourth straight defeat. The team is hitting .243 this season.

Manager Eric Wedge informed Murray of the news.

"We have a tremendous amount of respect for Eddie in what he has accomplished as a player and a coach in the game of baseball," Wedge said. "From an operations perspective we thought this was the best move for the major league club in the short and long-term. I want to personally thank Eddie for his hard work and diligence as a member of my coaching staff and for the contributions he made as a player with the Cleveland Indians. Hitting coordinator Derek Shelton will work with our players for the rest of season."

Murray was in his fourth season as hitting coach for the Indians. He spent 2 1/2 seasons as a player with Cleveland from 1994-96 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.

Shelton had been working as the Indians' organizational hitting coordinator. He will take over as the hitting coach for the remainder of the season.

Earlier Saturday, the Indians named Robby Thompson interim bench coach for the remainder of the season. Thompson replaces Buddy Bell, who was named manager of the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.

Yes he is my hero, I have one hero in life and it was #33....

Like I said last night, Eddie Murray being fired in Cleveland as hitting coach had to be a very awkward situation, the decorated Hall of Famer has more baseball credentials than the entire Cleveland Indians organization, and that isn't an overstatement...

He will resurface, he's a tremendous baseball presence, he was a finalist for the manager job here in Baltimore and one of the most dedicated and smartest baseball players out there....

Imagine the situation in Cleveland, Murray one of the games greatest players, best hitter of his era, 3000 +hits, over 500 homeruns, (and he hit 500 homeruns when it meant something)

To be fired by manager Eric Wedge, a no name nobody and to be replaced by Derek Shelton, just incredible.....its no coincidence this organization never wins...

They gave away too many great players in their prime or even earlier, Manny Ramirez, Thome, Giles, Sexson, just a very strange organization, that has been losing for over 50 years, with the exception of 3-4 years in the mid/late 90's, where they blew to WS appearances, it may take another 50 years .

Eddie is aces in my book! He and Cal should go into the Hall together! Agree 100% about the Tribe. One other thing, the Braves should retire Jose Mesa's number!:lolBIG:

Why isn't Eddie Murray in the Orioles dugout or front office? Did he piss people off. I know he was anti-media when he played but always heard he was the best in the clubhouse.

Tigers here still have Trammell, Gibson and Parrish all in uniform everyday.

Eddie was a coach here after retiring but left when the new regime took over.....he will forever be an Oriole....Oriole brass Mike Flanagan loves Eddie Murray, Eddie is the most respected player of his era, Cal got the ink Eddie was the Orioles, make no mistake we're talking about two players, one was a media darling and one was a clubhouse legend.

Because D'Angelo (sp) has no class! ZERO! A shame what this organization did to Cal's dad and to Eddie! If Boog ever shuts down , I will never go to another O's game1:lolBIG:

Was Eddie on the juice?

JK ace...he wasn't big on weights, he started in 1977 when the parks were big and era's were in the high 2's mid 3's...he earned his 504 homeruns...playing in Baltimore, and then Dodger Stadium, he also played for a lousy Mets team, he didn't really play for too many offensive juggernaut teams til he was way past his prime in Cleveland and then at the end in Balto,

This day (Sunday) in baseball history

June 5th 1992 -- Eddie Murray drove in two runs at Pittsburgh to pass Mickey Mantle (1,509) as the career RBI leader among switch-hitters.
