I thought it was a RAM issue. So I upgraded from 256 MB to 1024 MB. Barely notice a difference. I ran adware to get rid of any spyware. Still slow.

Anyone have any ideas?

Save everything you need to disks, partition your hard drive, and reinstall windows or if you have restore disks use them. Once this is done get all updates from microsoft including service pack 2. Your computer will running like new. Good Luck.

Guys if you are aware that a lot of programs start up when you turn on your computer which cause your system load up slow you should try this.

First off all you might have a lot of icons on the bottom right corner. Some of them are prolly no use to you.

This is what you do.
------------------------

START (Bottom left of your screen)

RUN... (Click on RUN.. it will bring up a box)

Type in MSCONFIG (That will bring up a box named System Configuration Utility)

Go to *Startup* (Those are all the programs that load up when your computer boots up)

Now you will see

Startup Command Location
(Name of the program) (File location) (Technical location)

Remmember never uncheck a box that contains (systemroot/system32) under command.

The rest are regular programs that you might have installed a long time ago but are still running.

If you notice a programs that you don't use anymore you uncheck it. If you want to make sure what that program is.. go to the location of it which is under COMMAND. My Computer -> Program Files --> name of the file

You may delete the folder but also you might want to uninstall it first. I recommend uninstalling it first... if you don't know how to do that then ask and i'll tell you.

So get on unchecking those programs and click APPLY.

When you're done restart your computer and you will see a big change in your computers speed, especially start up time.

That's all i have for now. Hope some of you try it =)

Spades, the first thing you have to do is rule out viruses & trojans. The free scan at www.trendmicro.com will tell you if you have any. If not, then you go after the spyware.....Spybot, AdAware and Spysweeper are all decent, and it will be pretty obvious if you have a lot of stuff (often a result of having a trojan).

Also, delete all of your temporary internet files(this may take a few minutes) and check your pagefile size & increase it to the suggested size. Also make sure that there is enough space for it on the drive that it is on. You could also defragment your drive a couple of times, but I've onlly seen that result in minimal improvements.

If none of the above do anything, you may just have a case of "worn out windows", which basically means that the installation and\or removal of software over time has left your OS installation in a less than ideal condition.

Keep in mind that Microsoft has no interest in any operation system running well for multiple years. The sooner it craps out, the sooner people will run to the store and by a new computer.

If you really want a computer to run quickly and reliably, just ditch the PC and buy a Mac!

One other thing most posters forgot to tell you to do is to defragment your disk.

Hit the start button, Go to program, Go to accessories, Go to System tools and hit disk defragmenter. This should be done at least once a month if not more.

The easiest way to solve all these issues is to formatt like 2 other's mentioned...There's nothing wrong with formatting, it's like starting fresh and new! Just make sure you back up what you need and have instructions for the formatt from your computer's manufactorer..

ALSO, most importantly, make sure you have the license key and a copy of your OS from Micropuke before you formatt

What else is on your CPU? Having RAM, but an old school processor and out of date parts under the hood could be the problem too.

SPYSWEEPER by Web Root in my opinion is the best spyware to run. Very user friendly. Microsoft also has a BETA version of the one they have you can DL from them.
---If you have one now, try turning it off and not having it on. On an older machine, a Spy Search pgm, WILL slow your CPU down. It is constantly running to catch spyware. Might be better off, not having it running 24/7 and just checking on your own every few days.

The MSCONFIG mentioned above is a MUST DO. The clearing of files or disk defrag is not going to solve anything if it goes THAT SLOW. May help, but if it is running slow enough that you are posting on a board it is something else. Especially if your cpu is starting slow when you start it up. AOL is notorious for putting all their stuff starting up. Same with MICROSOFT (IE, messenger, etc). Music program like LIMEWIRE, etc will do the same.
