INGLEWOOD, Calif. (DRF) - Giacomo, the upset winner of the Kentucky Derby and the third-place finisher in the Preakness Stakes, breezed six furlongs in 1:14.80 at Hollywood Park on Sunday, preparing for Saturday's Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park. Giacomo worked in company with stablemate Bullistic, who like Giacomo is owned by Jerry and Ann Moss. Starting 1 1-2 lengths behind Bullistic, Giacomo followed on the outside until drawing closer to his workmate on the turn.
Under exercise rider Sabina Seibel, Giacomo took the lead entering the stretch. He pulled away to finish the work approximately a length in front of Bullistic, who was timed in 1:15.40.
Giacomo has had two workouts since the Preakness Stakes on May 21. On May 30, he worked seven furlongs in 1:27.20.
"He was even more relaxed than last time," trainer John Shirreffs said of Sunday's workout.
Shirreffs timed Giacomo through an opening quarter-mile 26.40 seconds, a half-mile in 50.80 seconds and five furlongs in 1:03.60.
"I was wondering if Sabina was asking him, and she wasn't," Shirreffs said.
Giacomo will be flown to New York on Wednesday. He is scheduled to walk on Monday and do light exercise on Tuesday.
